What are the best things to see in Washington DC if you only have 3-4 hours to visit?

If you have only a few hours, you'll never make it through the museums -- they are huge.

Instead, try seeing the Roosevelt/ Korean/ Lincoln/ Vietnam/ WWII/ Washington Memorials. You'll see a lot of famous and moving sites. If you don't linger too long, you'll definitely be able to see all of them in 3 hrs and get some great photos. You can also snap photos of the White House and Capitol Buildings in the distance.

Have fun!!!

natural history museum, American history museum, national archives, air and space museum those would probably take up all of your time

Walking Around in George Town, Lots of shops there... even if you doesn't have money to spend, it's still Fun...

I would go to the mall area, and walk all around the Smithsonian buildings outside, and depending how fast you walk I would go to see the monument and the Lincoln Memorial. Given that you can pick up the metro system not far from the monument and also near where the mall area starts you have a number of options. Just soaking in the architecture in the area can easily take care of several hours. Enjoy!!!!

Natural history and Air Space museum can easily take 4 hrs. + iMAX movie + walk around smithsonian should be good one.

Go down to the National Mall - see the Monuments and memorials for a couple of hours and spend an hour or so in a museum of your choice (hint Air and Space, National Museum of the American Indian, National Gallery of Art, National Museum of Natural History are top pics, but there are some great other museums on the mall.)

If you are talking about a layover at Dulles Airport - then scratch that, since the thing to see is the Udvar-Hazy center right near the airport.

I'd head over to the Mall and right to the Air & Space Center (one of many Smithsonian museums) and/or the National Gallery of Art. Other museums are great, but these are very unique. From the mall, you can see the Capitol, Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial -- but I'd just take a few snapshots and then head for a museum. The Museum of American History is wonderful too, but right now its closed for renovations...
