Shouldn't the nearly 600,000 residents of Washington DC have representation in Congress?

What is wrong here?

For those who do not know, the people who live in Washington DC are left out of the game in Congress. While the city has a population larger than the state of Wyoming (and nearly the population size of Vermont, North Dakota, or Alaska), DC has no voting representation in Congress.

They have no representation in the Senate.

They have one "delegate" in the House of Representatives, whom can speak but can not actually vote on anything.

Is this right?

It wasn't until 1961 that people who lived in the District were actually legally able to vote for their President...

Many suspect that the attempts to give DC representation in Congress have met opposition from the establishment, unwilling to let the voters (60% African-Americans, plus many other heavily democratic-leaning, urban non-whites) mix things up.

Should Washington DC have Senators? Should Washington DC have a Representative in the House who can actually vote?

I love the DC license plate "taxation without representation". It's wrong. Plain & simple. It could be solved a number of creative ways, but no politican is motivated enough to care about the people to stand up for a big fight. If DC can get representation in the Miss America pagent, but not government, what does that say about our country?

I have always believed they should have voting representatives in Congress and the Senate. When I was growing up in the time of segregation people told me it was due to the southerners on the DC committees in Congress.

YES! currently washington dc citizens have taxation without representation because they certainly pay significant local and federal income and sale taxes! our nation was basically founded on the principle that such a practice is unfair and yet, here it is taking place in our nation's capital!! until dc citizens have senators and house representatives, the little consolation they have is that the dc license plates say "taxation without representation," so every time they get in their car, it's like a quiet protest against the unfairness of the situation.

Hey, Wasn't there a war fought about this?

Taxation without representation, still wrong after all these years =)

And, to answer more seriously, how much better would the government of the city and the funding of metro be if the city wasn't a district, but a state? Its incredibly wrong to tie the hands of the citizens of the city so that Congress can play at municipal governing

The Constitution gives representation rights to citizens of the States. Washington, DC is not a State. Nonetheless, I would be in favor of giving DC one Senator and one Representative.

YES!!
