What is downtown Ellicott City, MD like?

Ellicott City, MD and the Columbia area are on our list of places to relocate - from the west coast. Can someone give me a sense for what the downtown area is like? Nice stores? Decent restaurants? Pubs? Lively? atmosphere?

also, are their any farmers markets in the area on the weekends?

Ellicott City is very nice. Some parts of the downtown are historic but other parts have the usual stores and chain places. It is not a lively place after dark.

Ethnic diverse area. Same as Columbia for that. Columbia is also very nice with a huge shopping mall and lots of various communities. Personally, I would choose Columbia if I was going to work out that way and not in Washington DC. The commute to DC is too long to enjoy on a 5 day week. I figure it is around 1 hour 25 minutes each way during rush hour.
