Is washingtion DC part of a state? |
Is washingtion DC part of a state? Why do people STILL think this? Has anyone heard of the term "Taxation without representation"? Arg....what are they teaching in schools these days? Washington DC is an independant district not in any state. It borders both Maryland and Virginia. It is coterminous with the District of Columbia (abbreviated as "D.C."). The city and the district are located on the banks of the Potomac River and bordered by the states of Virginia (to the west) and Maryland (to the north, east and south). The city was planned and developed in the late 18th century to serve as the permanent national capital; the federal district was formed to keep the national capital distinct from the states. No it is not. It is independent from any state. It is not even a state. its like the Vatican its within a state but part of the state. Not part of either Virginia or Maryland. But not a state either. The constitution mandated that the U.S. capital be in a federal district, separate from any state. The first capital of the U.S. was in New York City, then in Philadelphia for 3 years while the new city of Washington was being built. John Adams was the first U.S. president to occupy the partially finished Whitehouse in the city which was still under construction. As others have said, it is not a state, it is not part of a state, it is what it is--a federal District, hence the name DISTRICT of Columbia.....Why do people keep asking this question? no when it was formed it toke land from Maryland and Virgina Washington DC is a part of a state. Washington DC is in Maryland. |
