Can foreigners join the Turkish Armed Forces ? and what is the age limitation ?

I would like to move to Turkey and join the Turkish Military can anybody help me out with what is required to obtain Turkish citizenship and whether a foreigner (non - Turk) can join the Turkish Military, I am from Japan.

Sure Matt S, the answer is easy I am a professional Soldier and have been on joint excercises with the Turkish Military and have visited Turkey on two separate occasions. I love their country and people, their culture is similar to Japan's with much more land available and better opportunities for professional soldiers.

Thank you very much for your will to join the Turkish Military. The only way is to become a Turkish citizen and you can get the appropriate info from the Turkish Embassy in Tokyo regarding this matter.

Meanwhile, please note that Turkey has 25.000.000 enlisted soldiers who will be called in at the state of war besides the already existing Armed forces so your diplomatic and moral support is more beneficiary in this course.

All Turkish Citizens have the right to serve in the Turkish Armed Forces BUT you must first become a citizen of the Republic of Turkey. Males above the age of 20 must complete a term of 18 Months military service (there are exceptions etc etc) I believe there is an age limit to when you can join the Military service in Turkey on an employee contract basis and the age limit is 35.

Unlike the French (ala the French Foreign Legion) Turks fight their own wars, they don't enlist foreign criminals into the Military to fight on their behalf.

Contact your local Embassy of Consulate to find out how you can apply for permanent residency and citizenship in Turkey.

plain answer is NO. Foreigners cannot serve in the Turkish army.

Later neutralized Turkish citizens can be exempted from the "obligatory" military service under certain circumstances
but someone who's not Turkish by birth cannot be an officer in Turkish army.

The last exemption to the rule was that:
Children of Turkish originated families whose families were forced to immigrate from Bulgaria to Turkey in 1989.
They were born as Bulgarian citizens but some families dropped their BG nationality and acquired Turkish citizenship along with their children. Those children are obliged to serve to the Turkish army.
