You will be able to use your HSBC credit card in Tunisia. Maestro, Visa and Mastercard are all accepted here. You may have to inform your credit card provider of your intent to travel so that you will be able to access your card outside of your country.

Skanes is part of the city of Monastir. At one point in history they used to be separate cities, but with time and expansion, they have merged into one. Skanes is where most of the hotels are located, and also where the Monasir Airport is. It is the halfway point between Sousse and the actual city of Monastir.

There are not many ATM's in Skanes. The only ones you will find there are in the hotels themselves. Many of the hotel staff will also charge your card for you and give you the cash if you ask them to. If you venture into the cities of Monastir and/or Sousse, you will find ATMs at all the banks, and a few are spread out in the tourist portion of the city.

There is a fee for using the ATM's though, and that varies from bank to bank. Mostly the fee is between 1,500 dinars and 2 dinars. Remember though, you also get charged a fee from your bank for having to convert your normal currency into local currency. You will have to check with your bank/credit card provider to find out how much that fee would be.

The way the money system works is this:

1 Tunisian Dinar (TDN) = 1000 millimes.
Paper money is in denominations of 30, 20, 10 and 5.
Coins are in denominations of 5 &1 TDN, and 500, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5 millimes.

English pounds, US Dollars, and Euros are all widely accepted at banks, hotels, and the change counter at the airports. There really is not one that is better than the other.

Just a quick note: Tunisia is one of the few places in the world where you will get a better exchange rate at most hotels than you will at a bank. Keep that in mind when you are changing your money.

Tunisian currency is not a fully convertible currency as of yet, so therefore it can only be purchased inside of Tunisia.

Travelers鈥?checks and credit cards are accepted at some establishments in Tunisia, mainly in urban or tourist areas. The Tunisian dinar is not yet a fully convertible currency and Tunisian law prohibits the export or import of Tunisian bank notes or coins. Tunisian law permits the export of foreign currency that was declared when entering Tunisia. Tourists are expected to make foreign exchange transactions at authorized banks or dealers and to retain receipts for dinars obtained. Under foreign currency regulations, a tourist can reconvert to foreign currency 30 percent of what has been exchanged into dinars, up to a maximum of 100 dollars. Declaring foreign currency on entering Tunisia and obtaining a receipt for dinars purchased thereafter will facilitate reconverting dinars to your original currency. Keep all receipts of monetary transactions for presentation when leaving the country.

Now that the government part is over, there are cash points (ATMs) all over Tunisia, mainly in touristicy areas, and at banks.

And because Tunisia is still a developing country, most places aren't set up to accept credit cards or debit cards. You'll find that only you're major stores, such as Carefour (in Tunis), and Monoprix, and Magasin General, plus a few major restaurants are equipped to handle them. Most major hotels can handle them as well.

My best suggestion to you is to bring the amount of money you want to have and change it little by little when you are in Tunisia. Which ever way you go, keep only the necessary cash on you, and the rest in your hotel room.

I don't know by a travel agent can tell you where ATM's are ?

yes u can use your card, there are plenty of banks and bank machines in the centre of Skanes and most hotels either have a bank machine or a person who swipes your card and gives you money

Enjoy your holiday!!!

You might have problems if your HSBC card is a maestro one. I've not been able to use mine in a few countries. Contact HSBC they should be able to tell you about using your card abroad.

hi you will be able to use your hsbc debit card only if you inform your bank that you are going away , which country you will be using it and the dates you are going away , this is a new thing for security reasons you now need to get permission to use your card abroad crazy isnt it , pop into your local branch and tell them or ring them ,have a great time x

Hi Sananiz .....! Good morning every one,
You can use your hsbc debit car,in skan猫s-Monastir or anywhere else in the other Tunisian cities while sightseeing.
Your hotel might the machine, the only thing you have to do is to tel your provider that your going to use your card abroad if it's not already done. Also he can provide with the name of the bank which suppose to be their agent or rep. in Tunisia ,such as STB bank, Amen Bank, BIAT, UBCI, UIB, ATTIJARI bank, etc ....just to avoid to loose time and use their ATM machines.
Enjoy your holiday...

I fully agree with what Tunisian belle and the other people have stated having just returned from a brilliant two-week stay in Port el Kantaoui. My reason for contributing to this question is just to make people aware however, that when changing Euros, Sterling or Dollars in either banks or hotels etc., in Tunisia that ALL NOTES must not be defaced, torn or have sellotape affixed to them. I had an experience where a 500 euro note was torn and no-one would take it, luckily however the prices for eating, drinks and entertainment were very cheap and I returned home 500 euros better off. A great country and a great holiday. I will return.
