Thinking of moving to So. Africa, what can I expect?

My friend is thinking of retiring to So. Africa, has a "friend" living outside Johanasburg, plans to marry. He's white and is planning on being the spiritual leader of a pagan coven. Just wanted to know what he could expect. (No, this isn't a joke. We're all pretty worried about his plan)

Oops that should be Johannesburg. Sorry

So he has a job with the ANC. Replacing Tutu is he? Google "crime south africa" and you will get a very good idea of what to expect.

well at the rate the rand is going, he'll lose half of his pension's monetary value by exchanging them for rands... not the brightest idea ever.

i'm with alf - jo'burg is especially dangerous! if he wants to come to SA for a holiday it's fine, but living here is a total different story.

Don't listen to old Alf ....he is at his best again tonight.....Do not know what type of "pagan coven" your friend wants to join here, but people are regularly burnt here alive (especially in Limpopo province) for being accused of witchcraft.....No jokes. Do some research. As for "dancing in the moonlight, naked and with candles being close to nature and Earth Mother" I am sorry to say it is just too dangerous, he will definately be robbed, perhaps murdered and be raped for fun as well or perhaps a naked white man dancing in the moonlight, chanting etc. in Africa.............perhaps they will burn him as well alive if the police do not arrest him for being a possible pedophile or sex maniac.

Some of our fellow-South Africans are a suspicious lot. I would be very wary about practising any sort of paganism, human sacrifice and similar gobbledegook.

listen to Alf....

I was drinking my tea when I read Alf s comments, I could not stop laughing....burned myself....YE AP I agree even though it is very funny....

He will do well as a top overnment adviser here, especially if he Slaughters Goats in the Back Garden and makes predictions from the dregs of a Johnny Walker Black lable bottle.

Again Alf thanks for the laugh.

BUT, on a more serious note, this stuff is very real, as you might have gathered from the sites on the net. I have an ex-husband who belongs to a Satanic Cult, as, in the late, Anton le Vey's, Church of Satan in San Francisco, and they do horrific things.

Once people are involved in things like this, it is very hard to convince them they are heading for a radical, dangerous life- style. If you want to put him in touch with the reality of it, try getting a book by Rabecca Brown called "He Came to Set the Captives Free". Being in SA and getting involved is very dangerous, because of the African witchcraft as well.

FUN ! FUN ! FUN ! I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER GIVING YOU A GRAND TOUR IN SA .SA IS THE NICEST PLACE ON EARTH AND ALL THE WILD ANIMALS ARE IN THE ZOO SO THERE IS NO WILD ANIMALS WONDERING AROUND AS OTHER PEOPLE THINK .YOU CAN E-MAIL ME.AND AS LUDACRIS SAID ALL THE BEST WOMEN RESIDE IN AFRICA

jeeez, great answers so far
(sarcasm)

There is a pagan (or maybe Wiccan is a more appropriate term?) community in SA. I cant speak specifically cos im not one.
Generally, you dont go very far before finding a crystal store, esoteric bookshop etc...

Witchcraft does have a negative stereotype here (as im sure youve seen), particuarly with the rural black population.
(Google muti killings, be warned it is grisly...).
So that may be another reason to dissuade him.

Also, he has to be extremly careful about where he goes what he does etc. Crime is a huge concern here, and if he isnt careful, he can find himself in a very bad situation.
