Is Portugal the oldest country in Europe?

Is Portugal the oldest country in Europe?

?

Portugal as his borders since 1297 "tratado de alcanizes".
Portugal is the oldest country because never changed his borders or name.
Denmark (the oldest): early historical evidence talk
Sweden: there are indications
France: the country with approximately same borders
San Marino some claim its existence
Not one 100% ccertain that the country existed with the actual format (name and border).
Before that we had the Lusitania, people from the Iberian peninsula come from that people. you know what if you are Portuguese just check those links below.

With its actual frontiers, YES: Portugal has the same frontier since the XIII century, when Afonso, the third, conquest Algarve. The foundation of Portugal was in 1147, after other countries like France, or Denmark, or Sweden, but the territories weren't the same. As a country, Portugal is the most successful case of stability in Europe history. (Japan is the world's most old country)

Jose Ferreira nailed it. That's it: Portugal has the oldest frontiers in Europe.

No, it is not.
It is one of the oldest, but not the oldest!..

On July 26 year 1139, after the battle of Ourique, Afonso Henriques was proclaimed Afonso the 1st King of Portugal.
Portugal was born.

Thank you for rethinking you answer,
i was beginning to doubt about your
wisdom, after you insulted my ethnicity

There is only one country in Europe that one can stick the word "Ancient" to its very existence. And that 's only Greece, the cradle of western civilization with more than 6000 years of documented history. And there is no other nation with a culture as old as this one in Europe. In fact, the word "Europe" is a Greek word referring to a mythological queen in the Greek island of Crete.

Ben_of_Marlow: Turkey has no more than 1000 yrs old history. The ancient ruins one can see in Turkey are again either Greek or Roman.

Turkey and Greece.

San Marino is the oldest country in the world (301 AD) followed by France (486 AD) with Denmark (950 AD) coming in 3rd...

San Marino is surrounded by Italy. It is situated in the Apennines, a little inland from the Adriatic Sea near Rimini. So all three countries are in Europe.

Portugal was estiablish by Afonso Henriques (Afonso I) as an independent kingdom around 1140. Four other European countries can be said to be independent before that at the ninth century:

1. Denmark (the oldest): early historical evidence talk about a seperate territory for the Danes headed by King Gudfred.

2. Sweden: there are indications that this kingdom was established in the ninth or tenth century by Viking kings.

3. France: the country with approximately same borders as today's was established as West Francia by the Treaty of Verdun in 843.

4. San Marino: some date its independence at 855, through some claim its existence before that.
