We're Visiting Portland, OR in April with small kids -- do we need a rental car?

We are considering moving there, and want to explore various neighborhoods, on both the Beaverton and Portland sides. Can we get away with using light rail only, or should we rent a car?

I would agree, get a rental. There are soooo many places to visit. Mt. Hood, the Oregon coast, Mt St Helens, downtown Portland, Powell's Books, Japanese Gardens Oh, and your kids will LOVE OMSi (Oregon Musium of Science and Industry). They have tons of hands on things the kids can check out, trust me they will have a blast. Also, In the same building is OmniMax theater, (www.omsi.edu). Also, if you enjoy wave pools theres Clackamas Water Park. (http://www.co.clackamas.or.us/ncprd/aqua... Oh and if you like to bowl, had North over the columbia river into Vancouver Wa and head to "Big Als' for a new experience in bowling.

....public transportation can only get you so far and it's less of a hassle when traveling with small children. Have fun and enjoy your visit...You may never want to leave.

With kids --of course. Even without kids, exploring in Oregon needs a car --so go for that rental

If it's your first visit, I would suggest renting a car so you can get around better. Especially if you are thinking of moving there. The light rail basically divides up the city but doesn't do much to get you into seeing neighborhoods and such. Portland does have an excellent light rail and public bus system-- but your first time with small kids-- rental car may be your best option.

It depends. Do you just want to stay in the city or travel in and out of the city? If just staying in the city, dont rent a car. It is a great place to walk around, and you could just grab a cable car ride if you need it. If you traveling outside the city also, then I suggest you get a rental
