I heard it was something like "Wardek" (VAAR-dek)

u mean Waldek i guess, its Waldemar and its diminutive is Waldek
its pron.
Valdeck = read 'a' like 'u' in 'up'
(seems u have some idea bout Polish pron. as u wrote 'dek' not 'deck' ;) )
Valdemar = again 'a' like 'u' in 'up', 'e' like 'e' in 'entertainment' n also u have to read the 'r' its rhotic

the full name is waldemar and the nickname is waldek
you have the right idea on pronouncing it.

but there is also a name walter, just pronounced valter, especially in parts of poland which had been under german occupation
