Can I go to a county office in Italy and recieve documents upon a visit?

Can I just show up at a Commune office in Italy and ask for copies of my ancestor's documents?

Many towns now have separate departments for requesting documents pertaining to ancestors, i.e. birth and death certificates. Also, you can look online to see if the commune has a website because many now do. It usually can give you some useful information before you go. Also the local churches can aid you in your search especially if your relatives are from a small village or town. Remember that women still retain their maiden names with official documents. That information is useful if you are going to be visiting the cemetery. Good Luck.
