Is port authority Dangerous?

Should I be concerned about arriving at Port Authority at 6:00am and walking around to find a place to eat breakfast?

I'm 18 and I will be by myself It will be on a Sunday morning

no. 6am lots of stores will nto be open yet, the only stores that may be open at that time will be delis... hmm. there is a mcdonalds or is a burger king? on 40th st and 8th ave

9th ave will still be asleep, so don't bother there. 1-2 places on 42nd st may be open i think. oh yeah, i just remembered there is small diner on the corner of 40th st and 9th ave. that is your best bet. it's right across the street from the bus terminal (southwest corner).

your best bet is probably start getting on the subway or taxi and go to your hotel and look for a place to eat around there.

if you decided to go to the east village, go one block to 1st ave and look around there, tons of restaurants in that area, 1-2 delis may be open. if you decided to stay uptown on 69th st, i don't know, check 2nd ave, to see if anything is open.

Yes,

everywhere in New York City can be dangerous at any time of the day.

The bus terminal has all sorts of people traveling to and from NYC for various reasons from various places. So you are going to have good and bad all in one place.

There was a time when I would have said "yes" without hesitation. But things are very different now and there is a better police presence.

Personally I would not hesitate to go there. But it makes sense to always pay attention and be aware of your surroundings no matter where you are.

Not very dangerous. It's OK around there, even though that area has a very slightly more seedy feel than other places (not too noticeable), but all in all, it's not bad. It's a block away from Times Square, which is quite safe these days.

I'd feel safe there, been in there a bunch of times. Of course, always watch your stuff, just like you would anywhere else. That should go without saying.

Enjoy!

I been to the PA Bus Terminal many time, including at 6am and I never been mugged, you'll be find. Just keep in mind since you coming along and you unfamiliar with New York City, keep your eye on you suitcase or carry-on case at all times. Don't leave it un attended, because that will raise "red flags" with the Port Authority Police.

BTW, in case you looking for someplace to eat breakfast at 6am, there is a McDonald's at 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues.

Good luck and happy travels.

It's not dangerous...like it USED to be.

When they cleaned up the area around 42nd Street, Port Authority was also part of that with a bigger presence of Port Authority Police. Still it is New York City and you should remain on guard (keeping your bags close).

The only "con" I see happening there are people that need money for a "bus ticket" saying that they are short a few bucks and have to get to (insert city here). Though they probably won't mess with an 18 year older for that.

A while back the Port Authority police tried to 'roust' the the people who are not traveling out of the bus terminal, their efforts were blocked by the courts. The Port Authority is a public place built with public funds.

With that said, it is safe, but do avoid doing things like wandering around staircases and empty parts of this huge complex. Stay on the escalators with the crowds. It is very well lit and generally crowded most of the time.

I used to come in from the South many times late-late at night, dressed in a suit, carrying a suit bag and a new laptop - a perfect target. I did this numerous times and never had an issue.
