Hi There

If you work backwards from the point that the Maldives is a tropical destination and is usually longhaul then you know it's always going to be pricier than a quick getaway...but and here's the good news

You can do the Maldives on a budget.

If you choose to go on an all inclusive basis - no need to worry about the costs of restaurants or alcohol.

If you don't go all inclusive the bill can really add up as a 1.5ltr bottle of water is about Aus$4.50 and you'll need at least three of these per day just to keep hydrated. But on the plus side, restuarants are relatively inexpensive; an authentic Thai cuisine meal for two can be as cheap as 35 Aus dollars for two courses and drinks. The more expensive the resort, the more things like restaurants etc cost so perhaps think about a 3 or 4 star resort (unless you find a great 5-star deal!!)

You can go island hopping when you're there (everything is charged in US dollars and are quite reasonable) to explore the other islands inhabited and uninhabited and there are plenty of other excursions too from about 30 - 200 US dollars. Things like Big Game Fishing can cost quite a bit.

The best thing to do is to search; go online, go to your travel agents and search for the best deal for you.

But I think the only other piece of advice I can give you is that you can expect to pay western tourist prices in the Maldives for most things. Tourism is their biggest industry and they have to import everything and desalinate the water so expect to have to make a dent in your wallet... but it won't bankcrupt you ;-)

It's a really great place...just shop around for the best deal even if that means booking hotel and transfers separately from your flight.

Have blast.
