1949 Armistice- How was Jerusalem divided?

Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Israel-Jordan Armistice Agreement, signed on 3 April 1949, divided Jerusalem, with Jordan controlling the eastern part, including the Old City, and Israel the western part.
The Agreement stipulated "free access to the Holy Places and cultural institutions and use of the cemetery on the Mount of Olives". Those "local military authorities" responsible for arranging free access for the Jews to their holy places never did so.
Sadly, the roads were kept closed, preventing Jews from having access. Promises were constantly broken. The British commander of the Arab Legion, John Bagot Glubb claimed that "Jerusalem's Arab and Jewish populations would be two separate cities 'with free trade and exchange between each other.'...The Arabs would be perfectly willing to allow the Jews to have access to their shrines, notably the Wailing Wall, now inside the Arab-held Old City." But, the Jordanians refused to honor the agreement. (Naturally, the UN failed to protest against these obvious violations of accepted international norms.)
Several times, Jews were stopped and arrested when they dared to cross the cease-fire line dividing Jerusalem in order to pray at the Western Wall. No one said a word to protest this discrimination against the Jews. http://www.unitedjerusalem.com/EMBASY_AC...
[Note that the Jordanian army under Egyptian command attacked Israel across the cease fire line in 1967; Israel was forced to fight against the Jordanian troops and won. Only then did matters improve for the Jews. The Old City of Jerusalem was liberated by Israeli troops, bringing down the divisive barbed wire and barricades. The Israeli government (unlike its recent Muslim and Christian predecessors) promoted safe access to religious sites for all in Jerusalem. The Knesset immediately passed a law on June 27, 1967, guaranteeing free access to everyone and determining punishment for the desecration or denial of entry!] http://www.sixdaywar.co.uk/gloria-report...

Before the War of Independence, Jerusalem was an international zone. However, Jordan and Egypt invaded Israel. Israel won the war, pursuing the Arab nations to the pre-67 borders. However, Jordan took control of East Jerusalem. To prevent further conflict a truce was signed.
