How long did it take the Japanese to get to California/ Hawaii?

Here are a few sites that I found. I do know that before Japanese migrants settled in Hawaii, there was trading going on between the two that involved sandalwood which grew wildly in Hawaii. The Japanese wanted the wood for it's beautiful grain and sweet smell, and ultimately harvested too much, so sandalwood no longer grows in Hawaii.
