How can I travel to Europe for Cheap?

Specifically in Germany

Get a "Sch枚nes Wochenende" (Nice Weekend) ticket from DB, the German railways company. For 25 euro's or about, you can travel the lenght and breadth of Germany using regional trains - some of which are fast too. It's an interesting and cheap way to travel, you'll meet loads of people and you can combine nature and cities. Hitching rides in Germany is also relatively safe, though if you've seen "The Hitcher": Rutger Hauer is Dutch, therefore close-by.

To get to Germany cheaply, it depends on where you're travelling from. In most cases, Eurolines buses are the cheapest option to and fro any European country. From America, fly to London or Dublin cheaply, then grab Ryanair planes - they're dirt cheap - to a minor airport near Dusseldorf or Frankfrut for example. Easyjet and Air Berlin also provide cheap flights from other European airports such as London, Copenhagen and Paris.

For overnight stays, consider camping or buy a Lonely Planet or Rough Guide book to lead you to the cheaper hostels. Usually, the independent hostels are cheaper than the IYHF ones, and in big cities everything is more expensive. Hostelling can mean sleep deprivation and a lack of privacy, but there's always a chance you'll party, and in quieter towns (btw Trier should be on your list) IYHF hostels are sometimes astonishingly luxurious.

Yet during the FIFA World Cup, travelling in Germany will not be cheap or comfy, you should wait a week before you go.

Live in Hostel's and do easy job's to pay off the expense. My cousin went to Europe for 2 month's and lived off of 50 dollars.

Rick Steves has several books, videos and a website. He has reported on Germany.

If you plan ahead, you can book cheap hostels over the internet. The aformentioned Rick Steve's guide is good also.

Check out oktoberfest, it's a BLAST!

For staying, you can use www.hostelworld.com to research places and rates where you want to go. In Bavaria, you can't stay in a youth hostel unless you're 26 or younger. Everywhere else in Germany, all ages are welcome at hostels. You can get a single country train pass from STA Travel - here is the Germany page: http://ibe.statravel.com/Statravel/railp...

Most of the journey in Germany are not long, so you won't need a sleeper car and second class trains are fine. I did Europe on $50/day for almost 4 months. As long as you're conscious of your spending, it's not too tough.
