South Africa..My husband wants to go see his dying grandma with his dad, should I be scared about safety?

I guess my husband was talking to his dad about getting his shots and visiting his grandma who has pretty much forgot who everyone is in the family. She is going to die soon and They both want to go see her before she passes. ( My husbands dad was born and raised there but has been living in the US for over 15 years now. The family left because of crime and so on.) I am really freaked about the idea of my husband going there because of the never ending list of dangerous things like illness, killers, theives, snakes and whatever else there is. I need some advice or somebody to make me feel better or tell me something useful...I dont really know what to think. I mean its just scary. He asked if me if I would come and bring our 1yr old baby girl..... if he ends up getting to go with his dad. I am really not liking the idea. I want to and all but i dont know. I think this is in or around johannsberg.....HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

although the crime is bad, if you take precautions and you're carefull, you should be fine. just don't go walking alone at night, etc...

i would definately go, it will give you the opportunity to learn a bit more of your husband's background and as person it will enrich you to visit the rainbow nation!

as travel destination sa is fine. don't worry about snakes - i've livid here for 21 years (in pretoria - 50km from johannesburg) and i've never seen a snake. illnesses are more aids and tb, but you shouldnt be exposed to that. if you're careful, you'll be fine! go and enjoy it! make a trip of it, visit cape town and the garden route - it's very safe there and you won't be sorry! it's beautiful!

This is a really tough call... I know that some parts of South Africa are more civilized than others, but I don't know specifically where you're going. You should spend some time researching her exact location and examine what is going on in the news around that area.

It is really important to spend time with our elders in their passing days, and I have some information here for you that might help make the process a bit easier.

Even if you decide not to go, you should give her a phone call, stay home with your baby girl and let your husband pay his respects.

It sounds like going to the US. So what are you afraid of? Johannsberg seems to be a much safer place than Dallas.

I travel a lot....I would not go to South Africa....unless I hired a personal body guard..a good one. If you travel alone in this part of the world you are a HUGE target..
