Claustrophobia?

Is there any way to overcome my intense fear of elevators, trains, and planes? Im going on a trip to Aruba and I cant even take an elevator without getting anxious. Its extremely acute.

My understanding of phobias (I am afraid of heights) is to start out with something that you can barely handle. Keep at it until you get used to it, and then work your way up (or in your case, work your way smaller).

I would not rate my phobia as acute, but it has keep me away from windows in tall buildings, rides that go really high, and in fact can get to me if I am watching TV and someone is near the edge of someplace high. Yet I can mountain climb without any problems - as long as I am tied into the rope.

So, in your case, start with a large room for example. Once you are used to it, move to a medium room. Then a small room. Then a large bathroom. Then a small bathroom. Then a broom closet. The idea here is to simply get used to it, knowing if it gets to you, you can always open the door and leave. Maybe you can handle the small bathroom for five seconds. The next day six seconds. The next day seven seconds ...

Just keep working at it until you can stand in the room without worrying. Then move to a smaller room and try again.

In my case, I can look down from a glass elevator as long as it is also moving down. When it is moving up, I have my back to the door. This is a big improvement because it used to be my back was always next too the door. I just got more and more comfortable and at least half the problem is solved. I can even look down from tall buildings for a short period of time.

Also, find something that helps. For example, are you better in a well lighted small room vs. a dark small room? If so, bring a light with you, or leave the lights on (such as the overhead light in the plane).

If all else fails, seek professional help.
