I dont want to get the tourista again :(?

im going to cancun in a month or so, and im really paranoid about the food and water there and i really don;t want to get sick
last year i went to Cuba and got the tourista, most painful thing ever! i really don't want to get sick again :( any tips?

now im not stupid, and i for sure won't drink their water, thats easy but maybe other tips that i just never thought about??

fFod, water, and ice at the resorts in Cancun is perfectly safe. they use bottled water for cooking and serving to guests and for making ice. always use bottled water to brush your teeth. EVERYONE in Mexico uses the bottled water...except maybe for very poor, remote villages. Avoid street vendor food and drinks. It is very unlikely you will have a problem. IF you do, go to any farmacia and ask for OXAL...a pkg with 2 pills in it. Take one right away and one 24 hrs later. Should help a lot. also buy lomotil and take one pill each time you have diarrhea...up to 6 pills a day... these will diminish your symptoms greatly. I am an American living in Mexico...have only had the problem once...prob. from eating in a home where food was not washed carefully. Hope your trip goes well.

drink only bottle water.
Peel fruits.
Eat only cooked vegetebales.

Don't use ice.
Don't eat fresh fruit.
Don't eat salads.
Only use bottled water to brush your teeth.

Drink coffee in the morning and beer throughout the rest of the day and you should be OK.

You also need to be careful about what you eat. Don't eat certain fruits and vegetables that cannot be peeled. You need to be careful about salads and make sure that you don't have ice with your drinks (unless they're made at the resort). The ice made at the resorts are made with the safe drinking water.
If you want to have some vegetables, sometimes it's good to put some vinegar as a dressing. It will help with protecting you from some bacteria in case you can be sensitive to things.
Make sure your food is hot too and don't eat any fish or meat that is undercooked.

I've always told all my friends that I do testimonials for Pepto-Bismol.... in fact, I think they should pay me to do commercials!

It pays to be careful and follow the rules to drink bottled water and drinks with no ice, etc... Having said that, we eat salads and brush our teeth with tap water and usually have no problems. But check out our page on Pepto-Bismol.
