Travel advice for East Europe?

I would like to go to Eastern Europe (Poland, Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia). I will be travelling alone, staying in hostels and by train. I am worried about the safety as I am a woman in my early twenties. I would appreciate some advice about (a) whether to go, and (b) things to bear in mind.

I live in Slovakia, and have been to all those countries. It's very safe here, but there are not too many foreigners here. Some of the conductors on the trains speak no English so plan your journey well. Usually I ask younger passengers to help me out cos most of them understand.
There are loads of hostels in all these places, it would definitely help if you have a travelling companion though to cut costs. I would head for the capital cities as there's much more do in terms of sightseeing.
