Why is the birthrate of Greece keep decreasing?

Average woman= 1.24 children

This is the trend in the whole western world. In fact, the more children a woman has the higher the probability that this woman lives in a less favored/developed country. And within a developed country, it is more probable she belongs to a poorer - not richer- social class. That shows that it is actually the life style that does make the difference. Not the money as some suggest here. Because Greeks have more money now than they had ever before in their recent history. Yet, they choose to have less children in order to have better quality in life = education, carrier, traveling, enjoying life and so on so forth keep women (and men) away from having children.

That thing with the gay people being one of the reasons of low birth rates in Greece (that one of the answerers suggests above) is a cute one...:). You really think we have more gays now than before? Or just more gays declare it freely?

Because honey
1)people dont have enough money
2)women want to make carriere
3)many people declare gay yet
4)there are more needing today than yesterday.px today you need your computer your car your vacation in an island but yesterday you needed only food and water to live.if you have and children you must stop thinking about your wants.
all the other things are inside this. This is the Axis :)

It seems many women nowadays require IVF. I asked my gyno about this (she said .... and I am unsure whether this has anything to do with it) She said unlike other Europeans Greek women do not take the pill early (or at all) and are now trying to get pregnant later - hormones have not had a boost from the hormone filled contraceptive pill - takes longer to get pregnant. True ... who knows?

Personally I think people are not having many children nowadays - it's too expensive (frontistrio etc). However in my town there are loads of twins - I know of at least 10 sets - IVF? Probably.

I'm sorry for meddling in this section, but the same question is asked in many places.

In our country, educated, working women have less children.

I think most women want children, but current modern life isn't mother-friendly. Child care is expensive, good schools want money and state schools are underfunded, healthcare for children isn't good enough.

Society demands women to make a choice: either be a mother or be an individual. It is as if women can't be both.

Besides, freer rules about sex enables men to live without commitments, and this is damaging the family, because women want reliable husbands to make children.

The difficulty of raising children all alone and society's frowning upon single mothers prevent women who can't find reliable partners from having children.

If modern life was screened and changed for a more child and mother-friendly atmosphere, I'm sure women will want to have more children. Monetary incentives could help, too.

Did you hear about the immigrant with 11 children who refused to work and lived with child care money in England? See? Incentives work! :D

Life is too expensive in Greece and the government doesn't give a ****.

Times are changing. One of my husband's grandmothers had 10 children, the other, 9. In those days, there was nothing else to do expect reproduce. I asked my mother in law to tell me honestly, did her Mum have 10 children because she really wanted them and her answer was no, it was because they knew no better. These days women are studying and working towards careers, they realise that there is more to life than being a breeding machine.

I don't believe anyone who has so many children can give them the attention they need. most of them were illiterate and quite a few died young.

I hate to say it, but I hear of lots of women who have abortions like having a tooth out, some even waiting until they know the sex of the baby and if it's not the right one, then they get rid. I know a woman who has just had her 5th girl, she never wanted 5 children, but her husband keeps on at her to give him a boy. My father in law is pushing me to have another baby (we have a four month old girl) he goes on and on, but we haven't the heart to tell him we won't be having another baby, especially not just to please him, it's not the right reason to bring a child into he world.

Modern women are wising up, but 1.24 is a very low figure, that really surprises me, maybe they are getting too selfish!!

Because men are getting caught cheating more and more with all the videos and spy stuff out. It used to be something a woman wasn't even allowed to question a man on.

Because children are expensive so it makes people think twice about having more than one. Life in Greece can be a struggle.

Because honey,,,,it costs money to raise kids...A greek woman has to work, raise her kids, and be a wife, cleaner, cook, lover, maid, secretary, doctor, financial director, business advisor, taxi driver and more and there are just two hands and one head to take care of all this....

that is great.the world needs less population, not more!
