Men always felt uneasy around smart powerful women and that reflects in ancient mythology. (Of course we know the war did not start because of Helen....right? There were far more important reasons...)
Anyway, if we look around us even this time and age we see alot of people still hate strong powerful women, even if they are significantly better than their male counterparts.
A perfect example is Hillary Clinton

Of course they were. But then the Greeks also had some of the strongest and most powerful women as well. The question really is, did Helen go willingly, or not? Sometimes, I think of all the religions and hero worship that goes on, the Greeks had the right idea, Gods and Goddesses who could interact, and do everything with mortals. Boy, those Greeks did it with style and fanfare. At least with the Greeks, you knew where you stood with your deities, mostly, until one of them decided to mess with your head...

It's not only the Greeks, it's the era. It is natural that the understanding of the era reflect on myths. In ancient religious texts, strong women are the troublemakers.

Chinese mythology is sexist too. Light and truth is male, shade and darkness is female. Yang is male, positive and represented by the Sun. Yin is female, negative and represented by the Moon.

I hate to inform you that there are thousands! of women having their clitoris cut off everyday! in Africa. This I heard last year on Women's Day on National Television.

Our mythology were just myths. They were orally told to pass the time. They were a form of entertainment. Now a days you could find many meanings in mythology. But if you simply read them for entertainment they're just for people to enjoy. But yeah, I can see what you mean if you look at them literally.
