Do they mean Macedonia the FYROM, or the Macedonia city in Alabama? Do they mean Macedonia the FYROM, or the Macedonia city in Alabama?
Edit: So, Greeks are OK if a non-Greek uses a Greek name, but they don't want the non-Greeks to pretend like are of Greek origin, right?

Goxy, I am Albanian, my username tells you that. The reason I am asking this question is that I wanted to understand the issue.
Looks like Greece should copyright or register as a trademark like Canada did for their country name. Greece is trying to negotiate a distinct and clear name for the FYROM and is willing to compromise with a composite name such as: New Macedonia, Slavic-Macedonia, Vadar Macedonia, etc...
How can they call themselves original Macedonians when they only occupy less than 10% of the origina kingdom known as Macedonia? How can they call themselves original Macedonians when their people occupied these lands 6 centuries after the Greeks? How can they use a symbol on their original flag that has only be found in Greece? (the legally can't so they changed it.) How can they call themselves original Macedonians when they print money with landmarks that are currently found within Greece's borders? (they can't so they had to destroy them). How can they call themselves original Macedonians and complain that we Greeks refer to them as FYROM and meanwhile they call TRUE Macedonia as Agean Macedonia... they can't they agreed to enter the UN under the name FYROM and now are trying to back out from their commitment (typical Slavic Behaviour)... How can they call themselves original Macedonians and claim that 120 countries recognise them as such when in reality only:

Looks Like there more countries that DON'T recognise them at ALL.
So the problem is they need to embrace their Slavic Heritage and leave the Greek Pride alone.
The problem is not using the name it is STEALING our history... Make Your Own!!! The FYROM. Greece does not have a problem with Alabama or Ohio using the name Macedonia. But Greece has a problem with FYROM trying to change the history books and claim the name and symbol of Macedonia as their own. This is fakery at its worst. There is one authentic and true Macedonia and it is located in Northern Greece. Greece hasn鈥檛 got any problem with anyone who wants to use any Greek name as long as they don鈥檛 pretend that they are the original!!
Let me explain.
Authentic Macedonia is a historical Greek region. It was the birthplace of Alexander the great and has played a most significant part in the Greek history!
It is true that around the world there are cities that use Greek names (Such as Athens, Syracuse, Macedonia etc). It is an acceptable and desirable practice.
None of those cities has ever claimed that they are the real Athens, or the real Syracuse, or the real Macedonia.
The problem exists with a small Balkan country that's being presenting itself as "Republic of Macedonia".
That country has no relation with ancient (or modern) Greek Macedonia but it is instead a Slavic/Albanian country. {The 2/3 of the population are Slavs (of Bulgarian origin) and the 1/3 are Albanians}
That small state although it鈥檚 called 鈥淢akedonija鈥?(a Slavic alternative of the Greek original) and it is officially recognized by UN as FYROM, it鈥檚 presented itself as 鈥淢acedonia鈥?with the most insulting way!!!
Not only they present themselves as 鈥淢acedonians鈥?but they are trying to link themselves with the glorious history of authentic Macedonia of Greece.
They have reached to the incredible point to even suggest that Alexander the great was not authentic Macedonian of Greece but instead they claim he was a Slav!!!!!!!
They even say that Greece should give to them authentic Macedonia simply because they use the same name!!!!
Greece of course is reacting to such ridicules claims like every other country would have done! United Nations and European Union have agreed with Greece and they have force FYROM to negotiate with Greece in order to reach to an agreement that want insult Greece and the history of authentic Macedonia of Greece.
Some easy examples to understand Greek position are the followings:
How do you think Italy would have reacted if a new country appeared calling itself as Republic of Venice??? Calling themselves Venetians and claim original Venice from Italy???
How do you think Germany would have reacted if a new country appeared calling itself as Republic of Bavaria??? Calling themselves Bavarians and claim original Bavaria from Germany??
How do you think France would have reacted if a new country appeared calling itself as Republic of Normandy??? Calling themselves Normans and claim original Normandy from France??
How do you think USA would have reacted if a new country appeared calling itself as Republic of California??? Calling themselves Californians and claim original California from USA??

http://www.history.com/marquee.do?conten... Greece has a problem with the FYROM, and you know it very well, you're just provoking the people who still don't know you, Agron. FYROM has many unresolved issues and is trying to steal the historical and cultural heritage of Greece, which is much more elaborately explained by ragzeus the Greek here.
I just want to say that the asker is an Albanian and totally aware of the whole situation, and not "some foreigner" as FaR tries to portray him. The one posing as a 100% Serbian for 100% Free Kosovo has just strayed over the fence, because he's our, Serbian well known domestic pest, but keen on fooling around. He'll be shown back to his place in no time, just keep the reference for the future - he's nothing but a troll. macedon needs no explanation, he's known to everybody as a fyromian. FaR seems unusually indifferent to this issue which in turn makes me think he's not all Greek. And no, you won't get any presents for the thumbs down, only a bad reputation.
Hope I cleared the ambiguities about their identities, as I would not like anyone to think that the real Serbs would take any position in any matter against Greece. We're completely supporting Greece in its efforts to peacefully resolve this matter.
edit@ FaR: I'll take it from you if you say you're Greek, why shouldn't I trust you? Indeed you are unusual for a Greek! They'd be at my throat by now, blocking and thumb downing me, but you just connected to my list ... hmmm.... strange... I knew you were sarcastic about the present, and I also knew you had no idea who these people are... that's why I wanted to clear it, no offense to you:) Of course you can and should have your opinion, it's a free public forum. When it is used for FYROM....not when it is used for the GREEK region Greeks dont have a problem with anyone using our name...
... Greeks have a problem with ppl trying to pass themselves off as us.....
Im sure you wouldnt mind if Greece called one of its towns America... but how would you feel if they said that the US didnt exsit and taht Apple pie and the declaration of indipendance was Greek???
I bet you would be just as pissed as teh greeks are with those Communist Slavic "so called" Macedonians!! THERE IS ONLY ONE MACEDONIA WITH 3.000 YEARS HISTORY YOU SHOULD KNOW... macedonian (FYROM) should be left alone by the greeks because macedonia is a indepentent country and wasn't ever part and will never be part of greece. in 1985 they made macedonia change the flag and the is a 16 year battle over the name Some people people are insecure individuals. They get upset over the slightest things.
They should concentrate on living their own life First of all, they mean FYROM, not the city in Alabama.
Secondly, I feel the need to express my disappointment over the nationalistic opinions expressed by many of the answerers.... I am Greek too, but [Macedonia] it's just a name people... I do not mean: well, let's allow them to steal our culture and identity(!), but it's not what they are trying to go... And to the ones from FYROM(Macedonia, if you prefer it that way), this is not the place to accuse us Greeks...
Everyone from both countries must note that this question does not display the ignorance of the answerer (as many would think) concerning this matter, but just how stupid our dispute for the name seems to foreigner's...
Finally, I beg you to stop this war with the thumb-downs!
EDIT: Thanks for my first thumb-down, if I reach 10 do I get a present? [Here's something I've read: The only way to confront stupidity, is armed with humour!]
EDIT AGAIN: YEEEES! Nearly there: only one left to reach 10!
EDIT TO GOXY: Indeed I am Greek!!! (just check my other answers- and if that doesn't change your mind, sorry, but I can't do anything to prove it) Thanks for clarifying the situation for me, but still allow me to stick to my point of view.... I don't think that expressing and defending my opinion will earn me a bad reputation or at least, I don't care that much...
And, obviously, when I was speaking for a present, I was just being ironic for all those thumb-downs... I agree with FaR completly, ditto to all his comments,
Edit to FaR; Please note that the minute they do not agree with you, the thumbs down fairies, call you non Greek etc,,,Ignore them they are not worth the time and effort, to convince them FaR, they are immature and low. |
