I doubt very much if you can get watches cheaper at the factories. Watches are not cheaper in Switzerland. I have found that the cheapest place to buy Swiss watches is not in Switzerland at all...but at Hong Kong Airport or other airports.

I lived in Switzerland for three years and I was always told that the watch factories are not open to the public. Most of the chocolate factories are not open anymore either. Shop the bahnhofstrasse in Zurich for a great selection.

don't know about factories, but if you really want to see some watches/clocks, there are 2 places i know.

in Zurich, the Beyer shop (an upscale jeweler on the Bahnhofstrasse) has a museum in its basement filled with all sorts of antique watches and clocks. there is always a curator on site, and will answer your questions. it's a really neat collection, and since there really aren't too many visitors, you'll get a lot of 1-on-1 time with the curator. hours are weird... i think weekdays 4-6pm only.

Patek Phillipe also has a museum/gallery of sorts in Geneva. i think it's inside their own store as well. heard it was really nice, with video presentations and such (heard about it from the curator at Beyer).

a buddy of mine is a swiss watch maker in Switerland, He works for Tag Heure. all I know is that he works in La Chaud de Fond
