Upon the hills in Nevada there are these letters painted upon the hillside,?

There is a giant "N" high upon a hill above the city of Reno, there is a giant "V" upon the hill above Virginia City, and a giant "M" upon the hill above Mountain City, just to name a few. All of these letters are painted with white paint and are vivid enough that they can be seen for miles around. Does anyone know what these letters stand for?

Nevada
Virginia City
Mountatin City

They were originally used for aircraft landmarks from the sky.

The V and M probably stand for the first letter of their respective cities. Most places that have a single letter like that usually it stands for the name of the town. The N in Reno might stand for the University of Nevada nearby.
