Where should we move to on the east coast?

We are geting ready to part from the military and are trying to figure out where we want to move to. We are originally from Kentucky, but don't want to go back. We have kids so we want some place low in crime. Not too hot, and not too crowded (we've had enough of both of those!)

We were looking at Portland Maine, but think it's too large of a city. But on the other hand we are afraid there won't be too many job opportunities in a smaller town such as Bangor.

Any suggestions?

Old Orchard Beach is a nice town, not too big. It is only like 10-20 minutes form Portland.
