How will you decide where you will go on your next vacation? Any "hidden gems" you've found?

We are tossing around a few ideas for our next family vacation (we have 2 kids, ages 5 and 9). We live close to St. Louis, MO.

We usually go to places w/ beaches and warm weather, but we are open to any ideas. We do like off the beaten path, hidden gems kinda places.

How do you decide on your vacation spots? Internet site? Travel agent? Magazine? Other?

Michigan has a lot to offer people who love the water, Lake Michigan is warm and has great beaches. We also have thousands of inland lakes. You can rent a cottage for a reasonable amount of money. The farther north you go the less expensive. Of course each area has it's ritzier places. look on line for places to rent. If you like camping this is the state to come. Mackinaw Island is a great family experience.
