Why is Livonia referred to as the whitest suburb of Detroit?

When there actually is a small percentage of blacks and arabics that live there vs places like howell and brighton where people are just plain racist?

Actually currently Livonia is 95.45% white, it used to be more so I think the name just kind of stuck. Personally, the whitest city I've ever been to is the city Grosse Pointe. And according to Wikipedia, they're 97.18% white. (GP Farms, Shores, etc. are also mostly white but the city is the highest) It's so bad there that one time I was at the Farms park and there was a black family there and an older (ignorant) white man went up to one of the sons and said, "What are you doing here? You don't belong here." Ugh, it made me sick.

The population is 98% White, 1% Black and 1% other.

I lived there for 15 years. I moved away in 98. I never heard that reference before.

Livonia is the closest mostly "white" burb near Detroit
Howell and Brighton are rather rural compared to Livonia

This question bears no fruit. Why do you need to know? But....information is king. I suggest any further interest in the demographics of a Michigan city can be found in this link:

Livonia was rated in the top safest cities in the US a few years ago. This also caused a nice "pop" in property values.

i never heard that i can think of more "whitter" cities than livonia, like New Boston where i live , Flat Rock, Gibralter, and Trenton for example very few other races than white. Yes we are still considered a suburb of detroit

I think Novi is..

Because Livonia is 94% white and is less than two miles from a city that is 90% black. It's seems glaringly obvious that the two races have segregated themselves, for whatever reasons (and I'm sure people would offer many). They live so close to each other, yet they won't blend. There may as well be a wall down the center of Redford, the tiny (in comparison to Detroit and Livonia) city that separates the other two.
