Jamie-
WTF?! are you thinking? The greyhound station is homeless central so be prepared to get off the bus and into panhandler heaven.

The bus depot people will allow you to hang around for awhile, but do not plan on staying there overnight and make damn sure you know exactly where you are going and how you are going to get there.

None of that, "oh, I'll figure it out when I get there" business.

As a bus traveler, you are obviously on a budget. Nothing wrong with that, but 8pm is night time around here and Detroit is nowhere to be wandering around after the sun goes down.

I do not mean to alarm you, just to stress, that you better have a very firm idea on when, where and how you are going to get out of there.

EDIT: I suggest you edit your question and provide additional information on you ground plans. Some folks who provide answers are super knowledgeable about the City bus schedule ... you can google DDOT, Detroit for info.

no detroit is so safe everyone on here is a detroit lover nothing to worry about

Dont think it's safe in Detroit I've lived there all my life and like everwhere there is good and bad. Just dont be out to late because thats when the real bad things start to happen GOOD LUCK!!! and I mean that for real.

Detroit is a fun town with a lot of nice people, but arriving at the bus depot at night, you aren't going to have an opportunity to meet any nice people.

You had better call the Greyhound office and ask them about cabs or other surface transportation.

Prepare to carry one bag. One. If you have two bags, one will be stolen, so bring one. Don't keep all your money in one pocket. Don't talk to anyone you haven't known since Junior High. I don't care how friendly they are. The only friendly people at the bus station either want to steal your money, your bags or your sexual identity.

Get off the bus, into a cab and as far from that place as possible.

downtown is nice....BUT not where the BUS station is! i love going downtown, and had to pick up a friend from the bus station one night. i was with my boyfriend who grew up his entire life in detroit & who knows detroit like the back of his hand....and i still felt uncomfortable at the BUS sTaTIon! i don't think it would matter what time of day or night...it's just a tad shady down there

Not once off the bus.....Greyhound service is the pitts! However as an alternative I would strongly recommend trying Megabus instead which has better fares and really nice buses and would also drop you in a better part of town once in Detroit. Amtrak also has some great deal on rail service to Detroit right now. Good Luck!

Get off in Royal Oak instead.

As long as you're not wanted or have something anybody wants, you should be fine.

Just stay aware of your surrounings like in any other inner city environment.

the get off in royal oak suggestion is a very good one. royal oak is only about 3-4 miles north of detroit. (going by mile roads).

and its a very nice town. i used to live there, and would not be afraid to walk the streets of royal oak at any hour of the day/night. actually i used to walk home from my job in royal oak, so id be out walking anywhere from 9pm- midnight depending on when id get out.
yeah, so royal oak is very safe. go there, and take a cab wherever else you need to go.

if you still have to get off in detroit, try looking slightly to alot homeless, maybe ppl wouldnt bother you then. basically keep all valueables hidden. not the time for flashy showing off.
