Meijer or meijers?

why do ppl call the store meijer, meijers if there's really no "S" in its name?

It goes back to when ppl worked for families, not corporations.

Back in the olden days, your grandpa worked at "Ford's" because Mr. Ford owned the place. That is why folks still say "Fords" without realizing what they're doing. You never hear people say I work at "GMs" or "Compuwares", because those places don't have family (human) names.

One holdover from this uniquely Michigan linguistic trait that is unusual is how people refer to KMART as going to KMARTS. Working at KMARTS, etc. It must be something left over from when S.S.Kresge owned the chain.PPL worked for and shopped at "Kresge's"

The Meijer company, likewise, is a family owned company so it makes sense that people refer to it as Meijer's. They just drop the apostrophy.

So, long story short, when you hear that, you're hearing a linguistic pattern from the early 20th century and it is a pattern you will only find in Michigan and parts of Ohio.

Folks in Illinois don't work at Fords, shop at Kmarts or drink a stroh.

I think its because it sounds better, and for some reason(i think its because people have been calling it that for years)its easier to call it meijer's instead of just saying meijer.
