Why is Texas called the "lone star state?

Cause during the American-Mexican war, they fought on their own without any help from the American army, even though the USA wanted the land as thier own. So the star on the flag represents, they lonly struggle to become part of the US. You know "remember the Alamo"

i think it's only because there is only one star on their flag. was this an obvious lame answer or what?

Because it was once it's own independant country. It was ruled by its own people, not by Mexico or the US. It is the only state that use to be its own country.

it's in the flag and it's because Texas used to be a Republic independent from the US, Mexico, Spain and everybody.
Later they decided to join the Union which was the trigger for the Mexican-American War.

kittysmle you are wrong about Texas being the only state that used to be an independent country. Texas is one of only four independent states to enter the US federation. Vermont acted as an independent nation for 14 years before joining the United States in 1791. California and Hawaii were also independent before being annexed by the United States.
