The media warns us of 'China taking over the world economy', 'chinese stuff has lead in it', or 'Chinese stuff is poor quality'. Why are they specifically attacking China when we import other stuff from other countries that mass produces cheap stuff like India, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, etc. I think there are several reasons:
1. ignorance of the world and facts. CTU and embedded are the best examples here. I am in China now, I don't know how I accessed YA. CTU has the typical American style arrogance towards other nations. (What? Your uncle is Japanese? That explains a lot. Ever heard of whaling?) How many Americans has ever been to China before? Child labor is ILLEGAL in China in case you didn't know (yes, it happens sometimes, but it's illegsl and it's strictly enforced, violation of labor law will be proscuted.)
2. Cold War mentality. The fear McCarthy et al preached about Communism appereantly never went away, and most people don't even bother look up the definition of "Communism".
3. Fear. The recall thing is a total BS. What is the percentage of things were recalled due to lead paint? (like 1%?) Losing the title ain't easy, some people take it too personally.
4. Media misrepresentation. Freedom of press does not equal fair and balanced press. The American media are represented by big corprations, earning money is their top priority. Hence they will only broadcast what the public wants to hear.
5. Falun Gong douchbags. I have yet met another group who are willing to slander their own country to advance their own political agenda.(although they are the minority.) I don't think everyone hates China. In fact many people like to visit China, and I'm sure many Chinese are lovely people.
It's just that only a few items have lead in them, a few computers have been hacked into, and a few copyrights have been copied. Like every country, there are good and bad people. So don't worry, only guilty people have something to worry about. My guess is that you're innocent. Jelousy with China rapid developement. China has become a symbol of what we hate about ourselves, and the whole "free market economy": disregard for human rights, the environment, consumer safety, natural resources, etc. They are also easy to demonize because there are so MANY of them consuming resources at an alarming rate, and NOT learning from the mistakes of the rest of the world (namely us) They have gotten very american appetities for unsustainable resource development which seems to point to an even quicker approaching doomsday date. Most people put India at #2 biggest threat to the world's sustainability.. This is a good question. The reason many Americans hate Chinese is ignorance. Before I visited China I had no idea what it was all about. I only heard occasional reports on the news about the Chinese government being bad to its people or Bill Clinton or George Bush visiting. I didnOnce I visited Shanghai in 2004 though, I realized it is a whole new world, and a lot better than living in America. The people are friendlier, the cities (besides Beijing) are newer looking, cleaner and well planned out, and the cost of living is much lower. I chose to move to China for good in 2006 and have not regretted it for a second. I have learned the language on my own, found hundreds more friends than I ever had in America, and with the low cost of living, get to put $1000-$1500 away in savings every month. I love it here.
So, the main reason Americans don't like China is that everyone is talking about the roaring Chinese economy vs. the oncoming recession in America. Also, everyone listens to the overblown media coverage of bad products coming from China. Ignorance leads average Americans to have a "TV perspective" of the world that is often completely wrong and unbiased. If more Americans visited China, I believe there would be very little China bashing going on in the US. I have lived here about two years and have nothing bad to say about it. no i dont! But I do hope some business men in China to put quality control over profit and regain consumer 's trust when buying China's products. It is ashamed to see just because a few bad apples, the whole basket were condemned.
Taking over the world economy? Well, if one understand how economy is all about, then it is not surprising at all but just a matter of time. Remember what goes up will comes down and vice versa...so? US is into recession now right?
Not a good question to answer at this period of time.,,i rather wish YAC a gong xi fa cai!!!! A point - you say 'the media' when you mean 'the AMERICAN media', I watched CNN when I was in China and I was appalled at the things I saw broadcast about China and was surprised that they even let it be broadcast. In the UK we're all for good relations with China hence why the amount people learning Chinese at university has gone up lots. The Americans attack China because they lost the Vietnam war - simple as that, the Chinese beat them. Also, America used to preach against Communism and look now - it seems to be working in China; huge population, great economy and the world's major exporter. The Americans want and need a scapegoat for all of their problems and China is sufficing for now. who said that, I don't hate china, and I never heard that anyone hates china, well mybe some goverments from other countries are just afraid that china might make thier economy get worse. Their slogan should be:
"Don't touch it, it wont break". I agree with bkk. It is true that 70% of Chinese students who went to study abroad between the years of 1978 and 2006 did not return. This figure was stated by the CHINESE Academy of Social Sciences in their report on the Developement of Chinese Talent in 2006 published on the 31st of May 2007 and quoted in The China Daily newspaper on the 1st of June 2007.
Here is a quote from the article " China's backward management and lack of supervision of personnel recruitment, which is also sometimes plagued by corruption and nepotism, were also blamed for driving away talent, the report said. "
I would also agree that when an official report for the Chinese Govt. comes to this conclusion it is no wonder that young talented Chinese people do not like their homeland enough to return when they have completed their studies. And would ask if these CHINESE people feel this way about their country is it suprising that some non Chinese people feel the same way?
EDIT : -
siangal0.
Of course there are expats in China who do not want to go back to their own country but what percentage of foreign STUDENTS in China DO NOT return to their homeland? Is it 70%? I think you will find ,if you bother to do a little research, that the 70% figure stated in the report is the LARGEST IN THE WORLD.
Ask yourself WHY SO MANY chinese students go abroad to study. Could it be that the standard of University Education is so LOW that top ranked University in China ( Tsinghua University ) is NOT ranked in the top 150 Universities in the WORLD? Here's the link if you want to check it out and by the way it is compiled by a CHINESE University in Shanghai ! http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2007/ARWU2007...
You say there are too many people and too much competition in China. How did you get a job?
you go on to say that " The student already got used to the environment in overseas " YES you are correct. Not only have they got used to the environment but they PREFER IT TO CHINA. If they did not they would return but 70% DO NOT !
I have NEVER heard of a " scholarship bond ". Are you claiming that Universities lend money to Chinese students for their Education and hope that they will repay this loan when their Education is complete? NONSENSE !!
Many would simply return to their homeland without ever repaying that " Bond "
" SIMPLE THINKING IS required for you to understand statistic and NOT JUST LOOK AT IT AND form simple minded conclusions ". Apart from this sentence making no sense in English I would say that it is not I that has come to this conclusion , it is the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences that have reached it. Do you consider them to be " Simple minded " ?
You ask if have heard of the increasing rate of return of " CHINA CHINESE " Please tell everyone how great that increase is ! TINY I think you will find !
Finally, in your answer to the overall question you sneeringly state that "....they have all become a " professor " of China through 0.01% of truth they get from TV and internet.Without any intention to see if it is true ". In my case, my experience was gained by LIVING in China for 3 years. Not from the TV or internet as these, as I am sure you know, are heavily CENSORED in CHINA !
I will just quote you and say " Ignorance is the answer " !
julyseve....
Are you sure you are from Australia? I ask this as your level of written English seems to be extremely LOW for a native speaker ( especially for one that claims to be a University student ). Your post is littered with glaring grammatical mistakes that border on Chinglish.
Are you absolutely sure that you are not CHINESE pretending to be Australian ? as many Chinese people pretend to be from another country when they post on this and many other forums because they think it makes China look better if a " foreigner " says good things about their country.
You say that 99% of Chinese goods " ..have good quality ". You are WRONG ! According to a CHINESE GOVERNMENT report nearly 20% , thats 1 in 5, or one fifth of Chinese goods are substandard !
Here is a quote from an article in The China Daily newspaper about that report :- "...But that left 19.1% of the tested goods laced with toxins or too many additives, without safety protections or lacking required label information, according to the report issued on the government website ( www.gov.cn )"
If you want to read more here is the link.
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2007-...
But I doubt you will as you simply do not want to learn the truth about some aspects of life in China.
Please do not accuse people of ignorance when you seem to be rather ignorant of the truth yourself.
Why are you pretending to be Australian when it is quite obvious that you are CHINESE?
Is it because you are ashamed of being Chinese?
Did you also know that the Chinese Govt are about to BAN youtube so that people in China will NOT be able to see the videos that you have provided a link to?
EDIT 2 :- siangal0...Do Chinese students go abroad to learn ONLY English? Do they not study a full range of subjects? Maths, sciences, engineering, computing etc. etc.?
You say many graduates cannot find suitable work once they join the labour market in China and that other countries salaries are higher. So there are more opurtunities for them to obtain good jobs and to earn higher salaries in their adopted countries, would you agree? If their salaries are HIGHER in their adopted countries does it not follow that their standard of living is higher and that their lives are BETTER than the ones they would have had in China? Or do you believe that they do NOT return because their lives are WORSE in their new countries ?
Your figure of 40,000 returnees to China in 2006 is , indeed, a drastic increase in numbers from the 6000 that returned in 1995. But have you worked out what PERCENTAGE this figure represents when considered against the INCREASE in the number of students ( and others ) going abroad to study? ( aproximately 150,000 last year and expected to rise to 200,000 this year according to Mr. Li Guanjun General manager of the China Education International Cooperation Group ) If you do work it out you will find that the percentage of returnees may have actually FALLEN as the 40,000 figure could be ALL returnees and not just students ! ( This is not specified on the website you provided the link to ) So DO NOT fall for the spin of slick employment agencies. THINK FOR YOURSELF !
You go on to say that some COMPANY scholarships require that returning students work for them ( for an AGREED length of time ). If this was the AGREED, by both the company and the student before they went abroad, is it not both DISHONOURABLE and FRAUDULENT of the student not to return and fulfill their obligation to the company that has sponsored their Education? Or do you believe it's ok for a person to agree to return to work for a company ( for an agreed amount of time ) that has PAYED for their Education, and then break their word once they have gained their degree?
julyseve :- If you take the time to read my post properly you will see that NOWHERE have I said that you gave any indication that you were caucasion ( by the way the word Australian has the letter "r" in it ) quite the contrary is true! I said you were Chinese and it would seem that I was correct. Albeit Australian Chinese.
I'm glad you are proud to be a 3rd generation Chinese Australian and will NOT, and have NOT, questioned your right to proudly proclaim that. Maybe it's your lack of English reading and comprehension skills that have led you to the opposite belief.
If China is such a wonderful country why did your Grandparents choose to leave it and then remain in Australia and NOT return? Perhaps you could ask them when you RETURN to your home country.
You ask why your English " must be so great " as you are a science student. Have you ever seen a scientific report or research paper written using poor English and full of grammatical mistakes and incorrect spelling? Here's a sentence from your post. " Ask me any University level bio chemical sciences! " What exactly does that mean ? It's nonsense !...... Chinglish !
The reason I enquired as to if you realised it was a fact that the Chinese Govt. is about to ban youtube was simply to see if you have ANY knowledge of what is happening in China. Obviously you do NOT.
Finally, why should I " be scared and pee my pants because China is going to take over the world power from the United States " ( another grammatically incorrect sentence ). Do you think I am American ? Perhaps you can use your " analytical brain " to work out my nationality. ( as I did your Chineseness ) But I doubt it.
WHAT ARE YOUR ANSWERS, LADIES? glyn k, you are just bbk!
I'm a Singaporean Chinese and I'm staying in China for good, FOREVER! There are alot of expat living in China and do NOT want to go back to their own countries too! It worked both ways!
It's NOT because they don't love their homeland, it's just that there are too many people and too much competition! and furthermore, The student already got used to the environment in overseas!
MOST IMPORTANTLY, they go other country on scholarship bond, that they need to fufill a few years of work after graduation!
During this period of time, they most prob find a spouse, and already set up family there! and they are used to the working style in overseas and do not even know how the China working field is like, THAT'S WHY they don't go back! NOT because they don't love China!!!
(this come from alot of my China university friend in Singapore, they took up like 40%+ in singapore university.)
EDIT: FIRSTLY, Chinese go abroad to study BECAUSE they want to learn ENGLISH!
SECONDLY, THERE ARE TOO MANY GRADUATE A YEAR IN CHINA, thus COMPETITION IS SO HIGH that a lot of graduates are jobless. and other country's salary is higher! But 15years ago, China's graduates earn only 400RMB and in mere 15years graduates earn 3500+RMB, that's like 10 folds, after 10yrs, their graduate salary will be higher and more '娴峰綊娲?#039; will follow!!!!!!!
http://www.pacificbridge.com/publication...
This link shows that the DRASTIC INCREASE in number of RETURN!!!
From only around 6,000 per year in 1995, the number had soared to over 40,000 in 2006. As China's economy is getting better more will follow!!!
SOME COMPANY BASED SCHOLARSHIP DO REQUIRE TO WORK WITH THEM!
SIMPLE THINKING is required for you to understand statsitic and NOT JUST LOOK AT IT AND form simple minded conclusions.
and look at the snow incident, Chinese overseas all came together to raise money for China!!!
And haven't you hear of the increasing rate of '娴峰綊娲?#039;?? It means, it's the INCREASE of RETURN of CHINA CHINESE!
To asker: No point asking, they have all became a 'professor' of China through 0.01% of truth they get from TV and internet. Without any intention to see if it is true.
One example of lead toys, MATTEL(US COMPANY) have already apologised for it, it's due to own design flaws of MATTEL and not to the China factory's fault! The one's at fault can STILL keep repeating and happily point a finger to China. What a laugh. What ignorance.
They can happily accuse China for a mistake US company made. What do you think they will do with other report that damage China?
I have been to the US on student excahnge many yrs back, they ask me if China have radio, must we carry Mao's readings, how do monkeys taste like, why do you need to go University when China is just a big factory and you'll just be a factory worker! etc... and DESPITE me telling them from the start, I'm Singaporean Chinese, and no Singapore is an independent country, NOT part of china. They still don't get it and assume all Chinese come from China.
Initially, my perception of China is not very good too, esp after the US exchange. HOWEVER, I reached here and it's totally, totally different!! And I LOVE it here!
Ignorance is the answer. Hi, everyone. I am from Australia, doing a University exchange in China. I'm not sure if you heard of Shangdong University (main brunch at jinan). But I have been here for two months. And boy, am I pleasantly surprised!
My boyfriend is a China Chinese, he is so thrilled to let me experience China(much to my dismay), and we chose China exchange together. He's from Shangdong, Qingdao. I needa confess, I dread coming here.
However, when I arrive here I'm so surprised!! :)
Initially, I thought Chinese are generally short, but when I reach here, It's so not true. There are so many tall people walking around. I was told that the height disparity is great though. sadly, this is because the wealth disparity is great too, normally in rural areas people are shorter(lack of nutrient), and people in city are much taller.
I do not think the Chinese stuff are of poor quality. Of cos there are bad, but 99% have good quality! And I do think that sometime you cannot just look from the producer point of view, the reason some products are not very good is also due to US businessman's force to reduce price.
Overall, I think it is due to the stereotypes and ignorance. Ignorance is not a sin, but to be ignorant yet make untruth and stereotypical comment is really not very smart.
This exchange really change my perspective in life - do not just blindly listen and take in. Go explore!
additional point, I agree with siangal0 because this is a dilema that my boyfriend and I face. He really wants to go back, but as much as I like China, I don't want to leave my family and friends in Australia. However, I don't think going back to China is so plausible too, cause he will need to work in the company who give him his scholarship, for at least 6 years. By that time, we may be having kids who started pre school in Australia.
WHICH WORD OR PHRASE INDICATED THAT I AM AN AUSTALIAN CAUCASIAN?! EVER HEARD OF AUSTRALIAN CHINESE THIRD GENERATION?! I AM SUPER PROUD TO BE AN AUSTRALIAN CHINESE!! AUSTRALIANS DOES NOT ONLY CONSIST OF CAUCASIANS!! I WAS RAISED AND BORN IN AUSTRALIA, I HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO SAY I AM AUSTRALIAN! NO, I DON'T KNOW THEY ARE ABOUT TO BAN YOUTUBE, BUT WHAT THE F**K DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH ME?! WHY MUST MY ENGLISH BE SO GREAT? I DON'T BL**DY TAKE LIT. I AM A SCIENCE STUDENT. AND ENGLISH IS NOT THAT IMPORTANT FOR SCIENCE, WHAT WE NEED IS ANALYTICAL BRAINS, (WHICH YOU DON'T). ASK ME ANY UNIVERSITY LEVEL BIO CHEMICAL SCIENCES!
DON'T BE SCARED AND PEE YOUR PANTS BECAUSE CHINA IS GOING TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD POWER FROM THE UNITED STATES! I'd love to visit China. But first stop throwing people in prison for their opinions or religions. Stop exporting poisonous food and toys to North America, and even more important, at least pretend you are going to do something about the problem instead of denying everything. Stop lying (that could apply to most other governments also). Don't act like you have the right to pollute the world like the rest of us did 100 years ago - you missed that boat people. And finally don't make such crappy electronic products that break after a week.
Then people will like you.
Oh yeah - China censors the internet so you probably can't read this anyway! You are right China is not the only Country that is doing bad things, but it is the most known. I try not to buy from China, because of the lack of child labour laws and sweat shops. It turns my stomach thinking of all the children who have their childhoods riped from them to work in sweat shops making toys, that will be shipped to America. Not to mention all the female babies that are abandoned, because the family wants a boy. Dear lord. What is wrong with the people who do that? I don't hate China, I just wish the Government would be more Earth/family friendly.
Oh, and I find the comment that said "You all look the same" to be horribly offencive. You should be ashamed of yourself. |
