Is it true that this happens in China?

I heard that in China, wives will often scream and yell at their husbands for not being "high status enough" (ie not having a job which in the wife's eyes produces enough income and status).

I heard that this is "not uncommon" in China. I am NOT saying that all, or most Chinese wives do this, but I heard that a sizeable number do.

Is it true that this behaviour is "not uncommon"? If so, why would the men put up with such abuse?

gypsy - why are you blaming westerners? This kind of abusive behaviour is not common in the west. There is no excuse for such abuse.

I have to tell you that this is absolutely true! Hard to believe I know, but China has changed and we westerners are the culprits. Status is a PRIORITY in China, there are the very rich and the very poor and I have personally seen this culture happen with many of my collegues there ( male ). Why do the men put up with it? Because they do, and they get their own back in other ways???

You're right about such goingons. Status has always been important as part of Chinese culture, and men have always seen to be the breadwinner, the aggressive one of the family.

At the moment, modern culture is actually changing so its acceptable for men to be not so aggressive or competitive, but culture is culture and will stay.

As for westerners influence, I wouldn't say it was their fault that women are being empowered. Men's status is a general belief - both men and women criticise another male if they do a job which is "weak".
