You can obtain one at the border, as long as you have all your papers and there are no anomalies you will be given an entry visa. Im doing a trip like that in november. I already got my plane tickets to HKG and for what I know, HKG doesn't requires you a visa eaven tough it's part of china. I assume they will cross your entry once you get to Guangzhou. If you have a US passport, you don't need a visa for up to 90 day stay. You can obtain a separate visa for China as you entering the border. You will have to apply for another visa for China You can apply for a chinese visa directly in HK, from the China visa service, or from any CTS branch. This EXCLUDES Hong Kong and Macao. You do NOT need a visa for HK or Macao with a USA passport. HK immigration will even not look at you China visa. So you don't need any new visa and can relax. Cooltron is correct. The Chinese visa you have will not be affected when you enter Hong Kong.
