Beijing to Mongolia visa run?

Has anyone ever done a Chinese visa run to Mongolia instead of Hong Kong? My current visa expires in 2 weeks and I need to leave the country ad Mongolia's definitely looking like the cheaper option. However, whereas there's loads of info online as to how to do the Hong Kong run there's nothing of note I can find regarding how to do a Mongolian run, some people say I can just go to Erlian on the border and then come back, whereas others say I need to go straight onto UB. Does anyone have any info which could help, it would be most appreciated.

I have to make a visa run every month and usually go to Thailand , Vietnam or the Philippines. They are much cheaper than Hong Kong which I have done several times.. The Manila run is very easy and quick like the Hong Kong run.... I have never tried the Mongolia run. Sorry

I remember seeing discussions on expat forums of thebeijinger.com . ppl actually did get their visa renewed in UB except for the rough ride.
