Question about the Octopus Card on buses?

Someone told me that when using your octopus card on the buses in Hong Kong you need to swipe it both when getting on the bus and off the bus. They told me if you don't swipe it exiting your stop that it will automatically charge you the amount for the entire route. However I could not find this answer on any website. Is this true? I'll be traveling there in a month and using their public transportation. Thanks.

All their above answers its true. I do take their public transport every time I go to Hong Kong and I never swipe the card when I get down the bus in Hong Kong. Its only when you take their metro (MTR) that you need to swipe the card when you enter the station to catch a train and exiting the station after alighting the train. You only need to swipe your card when you board the bus and thats it, you can keep your card already until your next usage of the card.

Maybe someone has mix up with the information between Hong Kong and Singapore, cause here in Singapore, that is exactly what's happen. For swiping the card when aboard the bus, the card will deduct full amount of the entire route. When you alight, swiping the card will return you the excess charge fare for your journey. All transportation in Singapore goes on the distance dased travel fare called fare stages. But Singapore uses Ezlink card and not Octopus card and take note that Singapore has its transfer rebates scheme and Hong Kong has its bus to bus interchange scheme.

nope, we travel on the bus we just swipe it when we getting on the bus.
Only in by the MTR(metro) you need to swipe it both when you getting on the bas and off the bus.

i'm from hk;)

What sort of idiot answer was the first one?

No, you just swipe the card when you get on. You don't swipe when you get off. What may happen is, that you charged a 2nd time for the full fare as the reset time for that journey is about 5-10 Minutes.

Just watch other people, you see nobody does that.

on the MTR (subway) you have to swipe to get out. But not on the bus.

The difference between the MTR and buses is that the MTR charges you on a distance travelled basis (that is why you need to swipe it upon entering and before exiting).

Buses on the other hand, are a flat fare, hence you only need to swipe it when you get off.

The system is built in such a way that you really can't go wrong, you only have to swipe your card when it is blatantly obvious that you must do so.

Enjoy the Octopus card, makes things SO much easier !

No no no, of course not. When you get on the bus, you just "swipe" the card and that's it. When you get off, you don't have to do it anymore

Besides, you wouldn't be able to. My mom tried to pay for me once after paying for her. She swipe the card twice and it couldn't work. IT WILL ONLY WORK ONCE.

Who told you that? No, you wouldn't have to for a bus. The reason why you need to do it on MTR or KCR is because the fee is based on the distance. When you enter the MTR, you swipe it once, but notice how the gate doesn't show any numbers??

You are not charged when you enter the gate. After you ride the MTR and get off, you swipe it again, that's when they charge you for it. You will see your card balance being deducted. It is based on distance. The bus is charged a flat fee.
