Are there any places in or around Chicago where I can be taught Swahili?

I really want to get in touch with the African in me. I think learning an African language and being able to interact with other Africans is one of the best ways!

Jambo! ("Hello" in Swahili),

Your best bet would be to get in touch with members of the group United Kenyans of Chicago. They will have the best resourcs for you, including where you can find Swahili classes or someone who is fluent who might be willing to teach you.

Good luck!

I'd suggest talking with someone in the foreign languages department of a university near you. Certainly Chicago has several schools, and I'd be very surprised if at least ONE of them didn't offer Swahili :-)

Northwestern University has classes, but you would have to be enrolled as a student. You can also look up Afri-Ware in Oak Park, which has seminars and workshops on various topics.
