2 & 4 D-Type, Nandambakkam Kudiyiruppu, Idpl Quarters, Chennai - 600089 There are various factors contributing to prostitution in Chennai, which is largely hidden and repressed. A lot of stigma and taboo is attached with it, and it is mostly camouflaged with secrecy and fear. With no notified area for these sex workers to operate in Chennai as in most cities, they are scattered and the possibility of them joining together to fight unitedly for their rights is impossible.
According to Dr. K Jaishankar, a lecturer at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Chennai has two active red light districts. In a paper he wrote several years back titled "Spatial Perspective of Prostitution in Chennai City" he mapped out hotspots on GPS and showed that prostitutes, are quite literally everywhere.
Star hotels in Chennai have come under the police scanner following the recent busting of a sex racket under the guise of holding 'birthday parties.'
The gang that was arrested last week at a star hotel in the city invited probable customers for parties in posh hotels, facilitating a link to high-class sex workers.
Top police officials are stunned at the racket, because it had been going on under their noses for nearly five years. The 鈥榩arty鈥?racket has also fuelled rumors that discotheques in some of the city hotels are hot pick up points for high society sex workers.
A few months ago a star hotel on Nungambakkam High Road was in the news for holding a male striptease. This had raised the hackles of conservative Chennaiites, who pulled up the hotel management for organizing such 鈥榠ndecent shows.鈥?At that time, the hotel management pleaded that the show was organized without their knowledge.
Are more raids in star hotels being planned in future? Joint Commissioner of Police (South), Chennai City Police explains that it is not the intention of police to target anyone. "These things were present in our society. Thanks to some good tip-offs, some of the rackets came to light and we carried out the arrests."
Assistant Commissioner, Vijaykumari, who handles the Anti-Vice Squad (AVS) of the city police, denies that they have become extra-active in recent times. "We were always active and we are still active," she claims. She also points out that this view has gained ground in the media only because the AVS has arrested some known actresses like Madhuri and Vinitha recently.
According to a senior police official, most of the actresses, once they lose their market in the cinema industry, take to the flesh trade. He admits that they monitor their target for many days before moving in for the kill.
"We build our case systematically, follow them for many days and make sure they are into flesh trade before making the arrest. We even pay money sometimes as a client to avoid suspicion, " he says.
"Of course our men are told to stay away from doing the 'final act'," says another police officer, with a laugh, adding, "despite all our efforts, media tends to call our action as biased, label it as over activism and even accuse of us foisting cases."
According to Joint Commissioner Tripathi, who was personally present at a four star hotel in T Nagar where the police arrested 10 call girls and their prospective clients, the police usually act on a specific tip off.
"If we receive more information from the public, we will be more active," he says.
In last week鈥檚 raid, his team had sent a young sub-inspector to the banquet hall of the hotel, where a 'birthday party' was going on. Admission to the party was strictly by a payment of Rs.2000 and the sub-inspector, who was in his civvies, entered by paying the amount. Inside the hall, he was approached and informed him that he could choose any girl in the party by paying another Rs.5000.
Once the sub-inspector got to know the procedure, he alerted the team waiting downstairs. The team barged into the hall and arrested 28 persons.
Most hotels, where such incidents occur, claim their innocence saying that they were not aware of what kind of negotiations go on in a party.
"We just can't keep a close watch on each and every party going on in our hotel. We take the guests as good citizens and expect them to behave like one," says GS Cheeny, general manager, of a four star hotel in T Nagar. "No guest would appreciate our monitoring their private party," he adds.
"More over we do not expect anything illegal in a open place where there are kids and senior citizens" he says.
As AVS assistant commissioner Vijaykumari says, there is no denying the fact that more organized sex rackets still exist in city.
But the Chennai City Police, under a 鈥榥o-nonsense鈥?commissioner, could be expected to crack down on the high and mighty places where the flesh trade is thriving. Not available
