Apartment or Hostel in Buenos Aires?

I'm going to be visiting Buenos Aires in August for about 10 days in early August for the first time.

I'm a 24 year old, gay man, visiting from New York City. I'm pretty familiar with dealing with larger cities and have pretty good common sense when it comes to knowing what to avoid, etc.

What would you suggest as far as accommodations? For such a short period, 10 days, would you suggest renting an apartment? Or just staying at a hostel? I will be staying alone, so it would be nice to meet other travelers. My budget is around $500 (U.S.) for the 10 days.

For 10 days you are better off in a Hostel or even Hotel:

I have found some apts on a few websites that are very resonable in great locations throughout Buenos Aires. if you wanted to meet more tourists/travelers a Hostel or Hotel might be better for you...I have also ran across a few hotels very resonable.

I will be in BA in December for New Years for 8 days and I myself am a 25 yo gay male. Would like to hear your experience when you return as this is my first trip to Argentina.
