Things to do in Bristol for the day ?

My boyfriend is coming to visit me down in Bristol for one day only. We are on a tight budget and i dont drive, so ideally it needs to be something around the city center. Anybody got any good suggestions of things to do ?

Learn to spell Centre for a start.

Go up to the Suspension Bridge. It is a famous landmark. It's about 40 minutes walk up Park Street and along a bit past the Zoo.
Near the bridge you can take a romantic walk along the downs above the Gorge (weather permitting).
Visit the Camera Obscura building near the bridge. Great views over the city.
It's possible that the city harbour boat tours may still be working.
If you have the time then take the train from Temple Meads to Severn Beach. Once you've left Clifton station it's a scenic ride down the Avon Gorge and along the Severn. SB itself is a good starting place for a walk along the Severnside dyke. Quite stunning if the weather is clear and can be "quite romantic".

Visit the SS Great Britain. It's the world's first commercial iron propeller driven steamship.
Visit the Matthew. John Cabot's ship.

Just off the Centre, near the Colson Hall is the Hatchet, Bristol's oldest pub.
Near Bristol Bridge (just off the Centre on the opposite side to the Hippodrome) is the Llandoger Trow. This is now a steak pub and was the inspiration for the pub "The Spyglass" in the book "Treasure Island" ("Ahharr, Jim Lad!").

About 3/4 up Park Street turn left into Great George Street and visit the Georgian House. It's very very cheap and will take about 45 mins for a quick tour. This will give a good insight into Town House life in the pre-Victorian era. See likn below.

Bristol is a city steeped in history and has some great architecture. Where you take him depends on what he's interested in.
Enjoy.

Your boyfriend is visiting only for one day and you are going to leave the bedroom? wow. I avoid central Bristol at all costs but the last time I went in @Bristol was the place to go. That was about 2 years ago though so it might be shite now. or the museum & art gallery at the top of Park St, that used to be free and has a good restaurant.

Walk up Park Street. On the left you've got Cabot Tower and the park. There's also some great shops along Park Street and at the top where it turns into Queens Road.

Then maybe keep walking to check out the museum or catch a bus to the Zoo (I think it's the 8 or 9 that turn up every few minutes and do a short circuit around central Bristol stopping at The Zoo).

Or maybe see a film at The Watershed on the waterfront they've also got a bar (bit pricey though)

~park street; college green, great shops, central library, Cabot tower, free city museum (excellent).
~Centre; SS Great Britain/ @Bristol/ docks (don't follow signs for docks as you'll get to the commercial and industrial docks which aren't really a tourist attraction...)
~Clifton; great architecture, suspension bridge, museums, boutiques, zoo.
~ Sport; Bristol City/ Rover (football). Bristol Rugby (premiership rugby)
~ Go south fo the countryside: head into north somerset and go for i walk on the mendips if that's your thing.

If you've never been then top attractions are the centre, park street and the suspension bridge.

I have a lovely little soft-back book called "Walking in Bristol" by Helena Eason. It measures something between A5 and A6 so is pocket/handbag size.
If you do some of the walks suggested it will pick out all the landmarks and give you the history of the places and the buildings. You may be able to borrow it from the Central library if you don't want to buy it. Also, go into the Tourist Information Office - they will have loads of leaflets.
Is George's still at the top of Park Street? They used to have a very good selection of books on Brisul. You could also introduce you bf to the Bristol dialect - get him a copy of "Krek Waiters Speke Bristle" (hope I remember the title krectly - loaned mine to someone and it never came back) - you can have a good laugh at ow us Bristolians (who cannot differentiate between ideas and ideals!) tawk proper.
Miss you, my Bristol!

You've got the City Art Gallery and Museum at the top of Park Street which is FREE. There are several other Museums in Central Bristol.

Someone mentioned @Bristol - half of this site closed down earlier as they weren't getting enough visitors, as it is way too expensive.

Hey, why not try looking on Enjoy England website:-

http://www.enjoyengland.com/attractions/...

On here you will be able to find a range of exciting activities that you can do in Bristol. For example why not visit Bristol Zoo Gardens, Science Centre or even explore Bristol on an open top bus.

Have an amazing day
