I want to visit Chatham, Massachusetts.?

I am African American and I have had horrible racist experiences while visiting Massachusetts in the past. What is the demografic like in Chatham, will I fit in?

Ah. Yes, as much as I love my state, I admit there is racism wherever you go, esp. in Boston. I have a very accepting and open attitude, but I'm afraid that some of the old traditions have remained after so many years.

I would suggest visiting somewhere else. Massachusetts, as much as it is liberal, still encompasses racists. Apologies.

I would say that in general there is not a large minority population on the Cape. That being said, you wouldn't be the first African American on the Cape. I would think that the closer to summer you go, the more varied the population will be due to tourism.

I am an African-American woman who lived on Cape Cod for 18 years. I now live on the South Shore (because of life changes, not by choice. I'd really rather be on the Cape.) Cape Cod and the Islands have a long history of people of color residing and working there. In the past (hundred years or so), most were Cape Verdean farmers and fishermen. Now there are black folks from all over living there, most recently people from the Carribbean. There is more suspicion and intolerance on the South Shore and Boston than on the Cape.

In Chatham, the divsion isn't racial, it's the haves vs the have nots. Chatham is the home of many fishermen and also has some of the priciest real estate the Cape has to offer. Suffice it to say that the fishermen don't live in the expensive real estate. You shouldn't have any problem visiting there. Nearby Harwich has in some of its villages some of the oldest communities of color on the Cape.

I hope I have answered you question sufficiently. You are welcome to contact me if you need more detail.

Wow you must have only been to 1 or 2 communities if that is the case.

Define fit in. If you are a human being then yes you will fit in.

If you are looking to fit in only by the amount of pigment in the skin of the residents then you may not.

Chatham is a very lovely place but gets over run by those nasty New Yorkers in the summer.
