Road Trip around Boston?

Want to fly from Norfolk to Boston and then take a road trip in March---need to have suggestions as to what to see and where to go. Should we stay in Boston or just stay at various points along the way?? Will rent a car in Boston from the airport. Will the weather be fair by middle of March?

I've lived in Boston my whole life and there are alot of things to see. Places outside of Boston that are nice to check out would be Cambridge, Quincy, Newton and Brighton. I don't recommend driving in the city/downtown though, because it can be tough with so many rude drivers around here. In terms of the weather...last year in March it was still snowing and icy. The way things are going now...this year will probably be the same. So pack warm! :-)

March is hit or miss for weather. Could be 20 inches of snow, or it could be mild. What it won't be is spring.

Yesterday I woke up to about 5" of fresh snow, then it proceeded to dump 3" or so of rain on top of it. This morning all the slush was frozen into a nice block of ice.

The obvious places to go in Boston proper are the freedom trail (you walk that), the North End (old North church/Italian neighborhood), Fenway Park (all torn up for the winter renovations), Old Ironsides, Newbury Street (high end shopping).

Outside the city - Lexington/Concord (Minuteman park/historical), drive out to Rockport via - 1a (though Revere/Swampscott), 129 to Marblehead, 127 out to Rockport (via Gloucester).

Problem is that Rockport is primarily a summer destination, might be all closed up right now.

Also you could go to the Cape, but it will also be closed down for the most part.

1. Boston's weather will be fair in March.
2. I suggest staying at a hotel outside of Boston, since they're very expensive in the city.
3. Public transportation is a better choice than car rental, since parking is difficult to find and pricey.

I cannot tell you whether to "stay along the way" because I do not know what the way is.

DoH is right and Xiomy dead wrong about March weather in Boston. The reason is that the Atlantic often keeps the area cold. Generally, from mid March until mid May the further you go toward the northwest from Boston, especially beyond 75 miles, the milder the weather is (it is actually warmer and less snowy that time of year in Montreal than in Boston).

Plan on wearing your winter coat, March is cold, and even on the more mild days the wind will be freezing. I'd put off renting the car for the whole time, particularly if you are staying in the city. It is easier to take the public transportation, the "T", and cheaper with no parking costs. Save your money on the rental and take in some of Boston's great museums and shopping. Stroll down Newbury Street, see the wonderful artwork at the Museum of Fine Arts and its neighbor, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and be sure to have a delicious dinner in the North End. So much to see! It needn't cost you a bundle.
