Where to live in greater Boston area?

My husband and I are relocating to Boston in the summer. We want to buy a house outside of Boston, some place close to the commuter rail. My cousin lives in Storrs, CT so we want to be close to her but also close enough to not have too long of a commute (an hour and a half would be acceptable...we are from LA and so long commutes do not bother us much). Does anyone know a safe area where we could live and purchase a house for around $250,000?

qualifiers: I know we could not buy IN Boston. Would like to take train in and remain as close to cousin as possible. However, Storrs is 2 hours away driving and therefore impossible. Also, not looking for a giant house. Just don't want to throw money away with rent.

Check out the Franklin/ForgePark/Bellingham/Milford area.
2nd Choice: Grafton/Shrewsbury area.

Good luck as far as a house for 250,000 (a "fixer upper" perhaps even in this lousy housing market...) The closer you are to Boston the higher the housing... You should stay at your cousins and look around the surrounding Boston area and really do your research... Your cousin must have some input???l assume you want to live in Ma??? or CT??? I live about 45 to 60 minutes outside of Boston in Ma... There are two train stops in our town... I sure would not enjoy the commute into Boston... It is CRAZY but coming from L.A. it may not bother you...

Condos in my building go for $450,000. Granted that's right in Boston but don't count on a house for that. Maybe a Condo in the burbs.....

Dorchester, or rochester xD no im just kidding, well unless your a gang member ^^. try places around boston like watetown, belmont, acton. i live in hopkinton, it safe. but stay away from places like framingham, i used to live there but now its... well diffrent ^^. GO SOX!

You'd be wise to contact a real estate agent and tell them your specific needs. You'll have a hard time finding a house for that price range without either needing alot of work or compromising your location. You might consider a condo, no snow clearing and no parking woes that way.
