Boston Neighborhoods/Surrounding Towns?

Hi there! I am relocating to the Boston area in a few weeks and have spent less than 24 hours in the city and most of that was taken up by my interview! Anyway, here is a little about me:
29 year old woman
Single
Looking to make friends and build a life for myself
I will be working at a firm in the Financial District and would like to take public transportation to work
Looking for a fun, vibrant, but not too college-feeling neighborhood
I have been looking at Somerville, and have had some positive experiences with people looking for roommates in that area.
Anyway, I would appreciate any information about Boston neighborhoods and the surrounding communities!

thalesgirl you give great advice! Thanks for all of the information!

Somerville is good for roommates, good if you're close to the train, can be a little college-y but also lots of folks in late 20's/early 30's - very good for going out. Can be a little grubby, though. Try to stay nearer to Porter or Davis Square - don't take a place that's closer to Lechmere or other stations. It's too far.

Some people like to live in the North End of Boston... I know that can get expensive but I know some corporate admin assistants who do it, so it can't be that bad - and I know they love living there.

I recommended this yesterday, but Southie is great.

Central Square is cool too. It depends on how hipster-ish you are (a lot of folks in Cambridge are ultra-bohemian, though I like it), but there are a lot of good restaurants and stuff.

Don't live someplace where you have to take the bus from far away. I have done that and it gets really old, really fast. For your income bracket, you should be able to walk to the T (the subway) within ten minutes.

Give yourself some time to make friends once you get to Boston. We appear cold at first but we're just taking our time getting to know you. I lived in Cambridge for a year before I felt really comfortable, and like I had friends to call whenever I wanted to go out. Those people are still my friends now, 13 years later. I know it's a massive generalization, but I think with Boston, "once you're in you're in," like, you are earning a place in the family. Very different attitude than in other places.
