Why are texas highways so poorly built and maintained? |
I went though Texas twice and most of the roads seem to have potholes, broken medians, ripped shoulders and so on. But I thought the Texas Highway dept. was supposed to be the most funded in the country,so how come I still saw a lot of bad roads then? Actually Texas has some of the best roadways in the U.S. It depends on where you were. Since there is now so many more 18 wheelers on the roads it is making it hard to keep the roadways in pristine shape. There are 18 wheelers coming and going from all port's of entry on the Texas/Mexico border 24 hours a day. Laredo is now one of the busiest POE's in the US. You did not say where you saw the broken medians and ripped shoulders. Was it in a large city? It's the education system "most funded". It's also stinkin' big. And now they let Mexican Trucks exporting Mexicans come into Texas. But infrastructure all over the US is having a hard time keeping up with the population. Highway funding is in part tied to laws and Texas has some strange laws regarding drinking and driving. At least last I knew, you can have a beer in your hand while you're driving but the cop has to see you actually drink from that beer can to cite you. You can hand your beer to a passenger and be pretty certain you won't get ticketed unless maybe you're fall down drunk and reeking of booze. Since the beer/liquor lobby is so strong and has prevented putting real teeth in the drunk driving laws... Texas has not gotten all the highway funds they might have based on population and needs. Still, driving is a contact sport in Texas, in a hurry to get nowhere as fast as possible, with as little courtesy and never use turn signals. Potholes just add another level of challenge. b/c perry isn't making the do their best work so he can shove that damm Tx transcorrider down our throats,e ven though NO ONE wants it When was this? If you think Texas highways are bad, then I would advise you to steer clear of Oklahoma and Louisiana. I'm a Texas inplant via the US military and you have to be crazy. Texas has the best roads in the country. |
