Moving to Austin, TX?

My husband and I are looking to make a big move from New Jersey to Austin. We've both fallen in love with your amazing city and wonder if any locals can offer some words of wisdom.
What are some of the desirable neighborhoods for late 20-somethings? And what are rent prices like? Any additional advice?

Not looking to become conservative, Newtobig. What gave you that idea? My coming from an extremely liberal state, or my 20-something age?

Since you didn't mention a $$range that you want to spend..I am just going to tell you my favorite neighborhoods. But, here is a run-down on cost: People feel that Austin rent has gotten really expensive, and it is steep compared to many towns. But, it is nothing compared to, say, NYC or San Francisco. For a great rental house in a cool neighborhood (1-2 bedrooms) expect to pay 1100-1600/month. Other neighborhoods, you can find much cheaper. But, if you moved to Austin for the wonderful atmosphere, as you said...then you want to be in the middle of it!

Here are my top two picks for 20something Austin transplants:

* Clarksville- loosely defined by Lamar and Mopac(E/Wborders) and Enfield and 6th street(N/S borders). Clarksville is this funky little pocket in the middle of several upscale old Austin neighborhoods....and is starting to become one itself. However, there are rental houses/apartments to be had. You can walk/bike to all of the best spots in Austin from here....bars/restaurants/shopping/hike and bike trails/lake/whole foods.

*Travis Heights/South Congress area. Try and stay between South Congress and Lamar and go no further south than Ben White. This is another bastion of funkiness with old trees and great houses. Your neighbors might have chickens and bike to work. There are some great bars and shops around and if you are close to South Congress you will never have to get in your car again, to have a great night on the town.

You can also check out Hyde Park, East Austin(some areas are still dangerous, but, it is turning into the next new "it" area to live-especially for the artist community), and around the old Robert Mueller Airport.

Good luck and welcome to Austin!

Try Dirty Martin's burgers...looks a little shady, but they have sangria margaritas and awesome burgers! Also, you have to go to Stubb's BBQ. It's the best BBQ in austin! and if you're downtown the dizzy rooster. fun place to hang out. you also have to go to at least one UT game - such a blast!

Try the South Congress area. It's close to the city and relatively affordable and very Austin-like (I ran into Quentin Tarantino at nearby Joe's once). Or, you might want to check out the new Mueller community, which is built on an old airport: http://www.rmma.net.

Austin is a quirky liberal town that voted against banning gay marriage in 2004 (but it's Texas, so the ban was successful). My advice to you is: if you're a social conservative, learn to embrace Austin. Otherwise, you should move to the more conservative suburbs.

I just moved to Austin last week....If you want to live close to Downtown in a good neighborhood be prepared to spend some money for nice places. I live approx 15 miles north off of Mopac which is really not a bad drive at all and if you don't have anything to do in downtown you have everything you need and more in the northern areas.......I on the other hand work in downtown so Im there every day...email me if you want details...
