Can I miss an initial flight and only take the connection?

I can get a much cheaper ticket if I fly out of one city and connect in another. The problem is that I will be flying with kids and it would be more convenient and closer to take the connecting flight only. How does that work and can I do it?

If you're asking whether you can skip the first flight and only fly the second, the answer is no. As soon as you miss the first flight, all remaining flights on the itinerary will be cancelled.

Chiksita -- what you are talking about (that is, missing your flight and taking the next one) has absolutely zero to do with what is being asked. The question has to do with whether someone can buy a ticket with two segments and only use the second segment, which won't happen.

That hasn't been my experience, flash. Usually, as long as I'm leaving on the same day, I can board the next flight out. I usually say that I overslept. As long as the plane isn't overbooked, you should be able to board whenever.
