How much is an infant fare from California to New York?

My child will be one at time of our first flight and two by the time we fly home. Do I get her an infant fare?

Are the most inexpensive tickets refundable or reusable?

If your child will be on your lap, they will be travelling for free ... but I don't think you want to hold a squirmy kid for 4+ hours! Infant fares are really just discounted "full fare" tickets ... so if you find a cheaper flight, there will be no added discount (and no, they are not refundable, but the funds are good for up to a year from date of purchase).

If your baby will be on your lap & if the flight is not full, SOMETIMES the flight attendant will let you put their carseat in an empty seat next to you. And, if your baby is a lap child, please, please, please take along a copy of their birth certificate (or other proof of age) ... for that BVD that was mentioned earlier. Yes, it may be obvious to you that your baby is under 2, but POA is still needed for that document (FAA rules an all).

If you're traveling with an infant or small child, you should know that proper use of a child restraint device (CRD) enhances child safety on aircraft. For this reason, Southwest Airlines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) strongly recommend that infants and small children who weigh under 40 pounds be secured in an appropriate CRD when traveling by air.
When Traveling with the infant on your lap:
* One child over 14 days and under two (2) years of age, not occupying a seat, may be carried free when traveling with an adult (12 yrs of age or older).
* Although a boarding pass is not required for the infant, you will need a Boarding Verification Document.

From past experience, tickets are not refundable and each ticket can only be used one way unless it is a round trip ticket. If you cancel your ticket with a good amount of notice, you will have a limited amount of time to reschedule your flight.
