Can you pay extra for an upgrade when onboard a flight?

On economy but is it possible to pay for upgrade if space available?

never once you are on board! You have to do it when you check in, or maybe at the gate, if you can do it at all.

I do it all the time. I fly to and from Connecticut to Colorado every week and I always book coach but upgrade to first class every week. It's way cheaper than booking first.

I've only seen it done once on-board and that was on a "charter" airline but it is done all the time at the check-in or at the gate on the scheduled airlines. Dress nice and don't give the agents any #$%^&*() and say thank you and you might get a free upgrade.
